Get Fresh

veets
edited November -1 in Park Slope
We ate at Get Fresh on 5th Ave this evening. The meal was delightful so let me tell you a little about it. We started with these radishes that were tremendously sweet. They were served with butter that was made at the restaurant and some amazing tasty salt.

Main dishes were curried scallops served with rice and some apple jam/chutney on the side and a pork dish with scallop potatoes and charred greens. Everything tasted fresh and great,

This place is byob or they will do a run to the wine shop across the street and get a bottle of wines off their "non wine list." We passed on that option but byob is the way to go here. The bill was little less than $40 for 2 people. The space is airy and clean and simple. The garden is lovely but the threat of rain kept us from eating outside.

We passed on dessert but they looked interesting and stopped in at Brooklyn Bread on the way home.

I have been meaning to try this place since they started serving food rather than their take it home concept and tonight was the night.
A plus recommendation on this one.

  • this is one of my new favorite restaurants to eat in park slope.

all the times i've been have been superb, actually.

i started a thread about it a little while back, but glad to hear you tried it and liked it veets. they also have a DELICIOUS brunch menu and serve stumptown coffee, which is the best coffee around, in my opinion.

the chef is actually from the television show, top chef i believe.

not sure if they've started or not, but i was also told last time i was there that all their herbs are going to be grown out in the back yard/deck.
  • I wasn't on the deck so do not know about the growing herbs.

I can say all the herbs used in the dishes were beautiful and fresh. The rice was dotted with fresh basil.

p.s. I was looking for the older thread but couldn't find it.
  • oh i just found it. you wouldn't have come across it in a search easily because i forgot that it was mostly about stumptown...

  • I heared they have this increadible rare coffee.
  • I cannot say enough about their asparagus and egg appetizer. Wow! It was delicious! I want to go back this weekend - my yoga teacher was raving about their pancakes!

  • The scallop dish did have a small side of asparagus and it tasted amazing and cooked perfectly where it still had just the right crunch.

  • I keep meaning to go here but never do...I know on Sundays they have a prix fixe roasted pig dinner for $35. I've got to get out and keep this place going.

Anyone know what Top Chef chef it is?

  • It's the guy from New Zealand...Mark (Marc?) something. He has curly hair, and used to cook at Public.

  • i've seen him there as well. food is very good....just a bit small and, even at breakfast, all a la carte.
  • Had breakfast this weekend, and have to say, it's amazing!
Started off with a mini pork slider because just the idea of it knocked my socks off. It was tender and on a savory scone, served with salsa that had BACON in it. Small for sure, but it sure amused my bouche. The coffee was STRONG, we actually had to ask for another server of cream, but it too, was delish. (Only complaint there was they only provide organic sugar, so next time I may be a total dork and bring some Splenda in my purse.)
For the main event, I got the pancakes. Thicker and heartier than anything I've ever been able to make, the serving was ore than enough. They had a nutmeg (?) infused butter that added almost a savory touch. The hubbie chowed down on eggs with a mixed heirloom bean hash. Much sharing was going on between our plates, and the side of bacon we ordered was a little on the fatty side for me, but was gone in record time.
I have to say that I like that their portions are not too large, and presentation is clean and simple. We're intrigued by the "Whole Hog Sunday" although I heard last week it was actually a lamb! So far I am thrilled that they dumped the overpriced pre-made meals schtick and are focusing on really excellent, affordable food.
  • I haven't been here since it was more of a cook your own food space. Is the "market" area still open? Can you walk in and get a cup of coffee to go?

Seems like the owners have a great sense of business flexibility, as this place really seems to change based on what is working for the market.
  • Okay, I have to rave about this place.

We went there for brunch today. The bf had a chicken sandwich (listed as pork on the menu but they had chicken instead today) that he was amazed by and wouldn't put down until he finished. I had the french toast, which I get many places. This was hands down the best french toast I've ever had in a restaurant. It was seasoned (nutmeg and maybe crushed coffee or cocoa on the crust), had plenty of egg goodness and the bread was great. We had the watermelon agua fresca and it was tasty and not sweetened (which I liked). And service was just fine and the tables were nice an roomy. We will return.
  • Opossum.. You just reminded me that I have to return to Get Fresh for a brunch, this time. I have been telling everyone how totally beautiful the food is for the last month!

I hope other people discover this treasure. I know when you just look in to the storefront it looks "open" but not cozy, but there are at least as many tables towrds the back as the front area, that you are seeinf and the back really is more intimate. In june, because of all the rain and cool weather, we did eat inside, but we checked out the garden and it was nice.
  • There were several folks there for brunch and we were there kind of early, so I hope that means they are doing well. And Veets is right, the space is much nicer inside than it looks from the outside. We sat just inside the back and the patio looked really nice.
