Think of it as a place where participants in an angry, torch-wielding mob can meet, plan activities, and exchange BBQ recipes. -

Well that is more than a little over-stated. -

i don't believe they are the same at all.
i could be wrong, but i think they are people who are "culturally" jewish or ethnically jewish, but believe jesus is the divine son of god. they may follow many jewish traditions and customs but believe the new testament as well as the torah (old testament)
but i could be wrong... -

The problem with Jews for Jesus is that they're deceptive. If you believe that Jesus is the messiah (no matter what religion you were born to) that makes you Christian. They claim to retain their Jewishness while believing in Jesus, which is simply not accepted by any Jewish group/people/organization outside their own. But no one would care about a small, fringe group except that they aggressively missionize, especially looking for Jews, using cartoon-laden pamphlets that misrepresent Judaism. Unfortunately there are a lot of Jews around who don't know much at all about Judaism, including a few who fall for their fallacies. I used to see them a lot in Manhattan, where they had a church center in midtown which may have since closed, and they always had that bright, blank-while-fervent cult members look on their faces that I have always found annoying, especially when they're trying to press litter-making garbage into my hands.

Essentially, they are evangelical Christians who may once have been Jews, or at least born into Jewish families.
They believe it is their duty to convert other Jews to Christianity. -
