A 20,000 seat arena is still a lot of humans invading the area for an event. The traffic would be pretty horrific.

While I was a supporter of Atlantic Yards, more or less, I have to say that I'm now convinced that Ratner is trying to hoodwink us into accepting another piece of architectural drek in his already monumental corner of sh*t. If you read the NYTimes piece, you saw that some who have seen the new model have described it as looking like an aircraft hangar. The architects also build Conseco Field:

Not _horribly_bad, but not quite cutting edge architecture either. I'm very worried.
Note that the new plans will require city approval. I urge everyone to voice their opinion to the City Planning Commission. Write letters. Show up at the hearings. They will listen. -

Yes, if I had to choose between the Gehry design or this one, there's no contest.

I guess when it comes to this I am not being "distant" and voting for the more beautiful.. I don't live right at the intersection of 4th, Atlantic and Flatbush but I am not naive enough to think that this development will not impact my life as I "drift" through the hood.
And.. for sure that design which is up for going through does look like an airline hangar... ech. -

You can throw the body of a Bugatti Veyron on the engine of a Chevy Vega and you might look good, but you're still driving a piece of crap. -

Gehry is an arrogant SOB, just like the pompous Paul Goldberger who promotes the infernally intertwined goals of design and capital at the expense of communities.

Look at all that parking, and no visual reference to the Subway that is right there. Who is this drawing trying to appeal to?

Yes, but would you rather look good while driving a piece of crap or look bad while driving a piece of crap? -

I honestly cannot fathom the stupidity of people who still support this project.

The potential of Gehry high design was the only redeeming feature of this project, and that was only a visual salve on a disaster. Now we're back to a pos like Metrotech, obscuring the clocktower, casting deep shadow over Ft Greene, and clogging up an already messy dense octopus of an intersection. Phooey.

this awful thing cannot possibly be built in this neighborhood.

My thoughts entirely. I'm not looking forward to the replacement. -

Tomorrow night DDDB is doing an update meeting on Les Yards. I can't go - but if someone does, would you please report back? A flat arena and acres of parking? In Brooklyn??

Acres of parking? Forget the arena... just keep the parking!!

More from the New York Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/09/arts/design/09arena.html?hpA new design by the firm Ellerbe Becket has no such ambitions. A colossal, spiritless box, it would fit more comfortably in a cornfield than at one of the busiest intersections of a vibrant metropolis. Its low-budget, no-frills design embodies the crass, bottom-line mentality that puts personal profit above the public good. If it is ever built, it will create a black hole in the heart of a vital neighborhood.

Is this developing or destroying Brooklyn?
-
looks better than the previous monstrosity
-
Ugh...what an ugly piece of shit. It will fit right in with the Atlantic Center's unimaginative crap.
-
And here's the rendering from the Times:

Aside from just basically copying Conseco Field, this is about as unimaginative as you can get.
Mr Architect to Mr Ratner: "Based on your budget, we can design a cross between an aircraft hangar and a mini-storage shed"
Mr Ratner: "Great. Slap some brick on the front to placate the 'livable streets' yahoos and get this through city review. Oh, and shave 50% from the design costs."
Mr Architect: "Done. Next?"
Like I've said, I was a supporter of Atlantic Yards, but I am now convinced that we have to kill this thing dead.
Howdy, Stranger!
