Who thinks it'll rain this weekend?

Subject: Who thinks it'll rain this weekend?

I''m freaking out because I'm planning a birthday picnic but I think the weather is going to kill it. I'm ordering a fancy cake, making sangria, people are RSVPing, so on and so forth.. it could be an expensive disaster.

Tell me, is there anywhere in Prospect Park where a bunch of rained out picnickers can continue picnicking without getting soggy bums? Any overhead cover? Or should I postpooone it?

Advice/ideas much appreciated. (I'm relatively new to the area and don't actually know Prospect Park too well.)

cheers.

  • There are several large gazebo type things scattered around the park You might be able to hang out in one of those. Alcohol and the amount of people might be a problem. Some of the gazebos are more hidden than others...

    Good luck!
  • If it rains heavily I'd set camp inside the bandshell. It's parararallelll with 9th street. Unless the structure by 6th street inside the park is available.

Forecast is looking pretty good for this weekend. It's still 5-6 days away, but accuracy has improved substantially that far out over the last few years, since they put in some huge computers and new global models.

  • thanks for the tips on covered arreas.. I can't believe the weather forecast. Why, just yesterday (when I posted my party panic) it was scattered showers on the weekend. and we all know that means no pick knicks.

but thanks for reposting the weather, now I feel all warm and fluffy and party-like again

Unfortunately, when the forecast changes frequently, it means it's a more chaotic weather system, and that even the most recent forecast may not be that reliable.
  • I would check WNBC's weather. I find it much better than weather.com.

When it comes to the 10-day forecast, they're all relying on the same data, the same computers and models.

The science says it probably won't rain this weekend, but it might. So what you have is a classic small risk of major catastrophy situation. What you can do is defray your risk by purchasing picnic insurance. For example, I offer to repair, replace, or refund your cake if it rains, but you bring a cake to my picnic if it doesn't. That way you can sleep at night, knowing you can have your cake and eat it.

picnic insurance! Now there's the solution to all of these weather worries.. I'd certainly like to have my unsoggy cake and eat it. Unsoggily. Wouldn't we all?

I do have a few questions. First, I'd like to hear about your credentials.

what sort of cake repair kit do you have? Are you a doctor of cakes? Are you licensed?

Of course, the premium depends on the risk. Nearer to the date, should the current forecast hold, I might be persuaded to insure you for just a healthy slice.

I have a Ga.D. (Doctor of Gateauxology) from The Sorbet in Paris, and spent a summer studying Torteology at Schwartswald in Baden-Weissbrot, under the tutelage of Herr Professor Kirschen mit Schlachtzahne.
