  • we've gotten, at various points, 3 free sewing machines. they've all been quite old, most have worked well -- the current one (sorry -- we gave away the extra ones already) is probably from the 40s and works like a dream.

it used to be that every household had a sewing machine, and since fewer people sew now, there is a surplus of old machines that still work but whose owners have died or stopped sewing or moved to nursing homes....

i don't have great advice for how to get hooked up with one of those machines, but you might be suprised if you ask around -- ours have generally come from people who have inherited their mother/grandmother/aunt's machine and don't want to keep it or throw it away. i guess you might post a wanted note on craig's list or ask around at work/church/wherever.
  • hrm. well, I went and got some fabric at Mood yesterday to make this crazy dress I've been contemplating. I think I'll sew up the seams by hand and leave the edges raw. I got linen and silk shantung so I think raw edges will actually look cool. I'll endeavor to wear the dress to some event so y'all can see my efforts. if not, I'll post a pic.
  • Oh, and you can all hit me later for being so lazy, but this is the dress I'm going to make and you can assume that the purple & pink things will be grey silk shantung and the body of the dress will be black/silver linen. and yeah, I'm trying my hand at not using a pattern, either. as you can all imagine, there's a 50/50 chance of this being a total disaster.

  • I just saw this thread b/c I am looking for a good local place to buy buttons, and I was reading about the sewing machines. I was just going to put up a post in Classifieds about selling my Singer 758 sewing machine. It was my mom's and purchased in the 70's. I only used it once about a year ago and it worked fine. Maybe could use a tune-up but it seems to be in good working condition. I don't have the original manual but I know you can get them online/eBay. I am including some needles/notions and also have a Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing. I am asking $35 for all of it, cash & carry in PH. Call me if you're interested. 718-857-4279.

Sorry if this seems like spam, I really just saw this thread before I posted to Classifieds!

Oh, any good local place to buy some buttons for a baby sweater??
