Traditional home-cooking Japanese food in the Slope? — Brooklynian

Traditional home-cooking Japanese food in the Slope?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I live in the SE part of Park Slope and I never keep track of stores on the northern part of 5th ave.

Are there are Japanese restaurants that serve typical food? I know of a few places in Manhattan, but not in Brooklyn. My favorite is Soy in the LES. The only Japanese restaurants I see are sushi places, which is not typical Japanese.

  • Tamari has some more homestyle dishes - Fifth Ave between Union and Sackett
  • would the short-lived Yakitori Kitchen, in the now torn-down space which last occupied Sallie Mae's Cafe on 6th and Sterling, have counted?
  • Taro, believe it or not, has some great kitchen food now. The owner hired a new chef named Nakamichi, who makes a killer pork rib dish, as well as other stuff.

Do they still have the same people at the sushi bar?
  • Except for Sano the owner, they never keep anyone for more than six months it seems. I only go if Sano is working the bar. The big guy who works there is decent enough as well, I usually have him serve me sushi for lunch.
  • Thanks everyone. Sushi restaurants that serve one or two typical dishes is not what I am looking for. Why must every Japanese place serve the typical American sushi/teriyaki/tempura?
  • what kind of dishes are you looking for?
