My internet connection is too slow

I've got Verizon DSL, I'm in Windsor Terrace about 1/2 mile from the central office at 355 14 ST. I've had a few problems over the years but most of them were caused by faulty equipment at my end.
Is your network encrypted? Did you call Verizon? What kind of modem and or router do you have?
I swapped out my Verizon modem and Netgear router for a Verizon all in one unit and now thye will take responsability for it -
if it was at one time fast and is gradually getting slower it MIGHT be as simple as the screws that connect the wires to the wall jack getting dirty...I had this issue a couple of years ago, loosened the screws, wiggled them around, and tightened them again, and it made a dramatic difference for me. I might have just been really lucky ;-)
it could also be a similar problem with the wiring farther down the line, where you don't have access to it. You can test your dsl's speed with this: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1 -- if it's dramatically lower than what they say they're selling you, you should call for a service call (might still be equipment on your end, unfortunately, in which case I'd do what the previous poster suggests, swap for verizon gear)
I use speakeasy.net for DSL...I have been with them for years and have been 99.99% happy with them. I think they're more expensive than Verizon, tho'...$50/mo for DSL over phone line, $56 for "naked dsl" i.e. dsl w/no phone service
these are the screws I'm talking about:

are you talking DSL or FIOS?
If it is DSL you are using....my god...get cable! It's sooo much faster! -
we can't even get dsl in east prospect heights! (no - i don't mean CH)

DSL is old problematic technology. Look into Verizon FIOS or cable. Checkout dslreports.com for reviews. Verizon FIOS & the cable companies are having a price war right now depending on what service is available in your neighborhood.

Do you have a wireless router? My Verizon DSL slowed down to a crawl, and the problem turned out to by my wireless router... It was getting interference from about a dozen other wireless routers nearby. I went into the preferences for my wireless router and changed the channel the router uses. I think I changed the channel from "default" to "3." Now it works like a dream...
I just tested my download speed: it came out at 936 Kbs per second, which I gather is about what DSL should be... -
oh yeah, good suggestion, I hadn't even thought about that. Whenever I put in wireless routers I change the default channel to something else. 6 and 11 are good 2nd choices, because they have less (or no) overlap with the other channels.
