  • Subject: TURF WAR!!

    The battle of the century is taking place right now folks. The stroller brigade thinks that the new turf put in at the improved Washington (?) Park on 3rd st and 5th Ave. should be theirs. Never mind that they already have the playground and the open grassy area; they want it all. Meetings have taken place, and if you want your voice to be heard, you better get on it. The Parks Dept wants to please the "community." This means the loudest most organized amongst us gets heard. Speak up for the right to play softball on your team; your kids soccer games; wait, I don't want to have to appease the stroller brigade here....
    ADULTS AND TEENS ALSO NEED A PLACE TO PLAY!
    (And yes yes y'all, I have kids)
  • So if you're a parent, and you're OK w/the permit priority at JJ Byrne, and I'm a parent and I'm OK w/the permit priority at JJ Byrne, who exactly is the "stroller brigade"?
  • Subject: whoops!

    Sorry folks, I didn't see thread below. Can mod. please delete this thread? I couldn't. Thanks.

    Mod Note: I merged the threads :D

    i am also a parent who is more than ok with that field being team sports/permit priority, but, there obviously are others who do not agree. I guess those would be the stroller brigade
  • I'm also a parent who thinks team sports/permits should get priority. Actually, I'd rather my kids run around on grass than turf, so even though the turf's a block from my house, we'll just walk to Prospect Park. Without a stroller of any kind.
  • Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't that area pretty much not used or only used for concrete sports before? If that's correct, it's not like the city has taken space away from parents who still have that big playground right there on the block.

    I don't have kids nor do I play permit sports, but from what I see in other parks and with previous use of that space, I don't know what the fuss about it being permit sports is all about. Free play? If you can't go to Prospect or if the other spaces around aren't enough, maybe it's time to move further out where you get a yard.
  • You're right and I agree completely. I've lived right around the park for 10 years, and before the turf was laid out, there wasn't an issue. I don't understand what the fuss is about. Why does everyone need to be heard about usage just because there's been an upgrade to the area?
  • I agree with most of the posts above. Well said. To clarify:
    It's irrelevant that it wasn't used before--that's why it needed a change. Now that it's improved real estate; people want to claim their right to use it.
    Stroller brigade=self centered parents with children under 4
    Community= singles,single moms, parents of teens, lesbians,couples,etc..
    P.S. Free play is a state of mind-not a place.
