Sandwiches on Vandy or Washington?

My 2 usual options for road trip sandwiches (or sandwiches to take on a plane) are: Carneviento (Gran Castillo De Jagua) on Flatbush or City Sub on Bergen just past Flatbush on the Park Slope side.
-
I second City Sub. And now that's what I *must* have for lunch.
-
D'Oh! How could I forget!?
The new place on Flatbush from the Franny's people- Brooklyn Larder has amazing sandwiches! -
I also second City Sub with the caveat: I love their meatball and hot pastrami. Which isn't exactly good for travel. However I did see a cop order one of their Italian subs and it looked good.
If you are driving and don't mind, 5th Ave Market on 5th and Berkeley has an amazing "godfather 2" cold sandwich that is just fully packed with delicious meats, pickled jalapenos, and cheese in an oil and vinegar dressing. Every person I have ever ordered it for has fully enjoyed it. -
fish and sip has some solid panini/salad combos. otherwise city sub=all day e'er day.
-
less fancy and smaller, but the usual has a truly perfect diner BLT.
-
For the record, this thread made me (yes, forced me) to have City Sub for lunch today. Seafood salad, indeed.
-
excellent question. we begin pretty much every road trip with a stop at bergen bagels (terrace if we're going that way, but usually we're not) for an egg and cheese on a toasted buttered bagel and a large cafe and away!

I'd say it depends where you're going and how long those sandwiches are going to sit. If it's more than two hours I would go to City Sub. If you happen to have a warmer plugged in to your cigarette lighter you might want to try David's Brisket House on Nostrand & Herkimer. It's a tad out of the way but once you get on Bedford Ave you can either hit the BQE or bridges in a short time.
I will second Sweet Tea's rec for The Usual. Not for the BLT, they just happen to make a mean albacore tuna on toast with bacon, tomato, onion and mayo. -
I think David's Brisket House is gone. Unless it was being renovated, I remember walking by and it was all papered up. Which would be a shame, because this world needs more brisket, not less.

The sandwiches at Mitchells on Flatbush are very good, even if the place has a bit of an identity issue (ie sandwich place, fancy restaurant, and informal bar in the basement)...You need to be careful about what you order, since some of them may not travel well, but they are big...The pastrami is good (Its no substitute for Katz's or Carnegie), but it is good in a pinch (ie it seems to be home made and not boars head or similar that most places have)

David's has new owners. I went there last week. I believe they got rid of the hot food but their pastrami is seriously off the hook. -
That's great to hear. David's Brisket with a side of A&A Doubles are one of my fave BK meals!
-
David's Brisket House is amazing!! Brisket is good, but HOT DAMN their pastrami is AMAZING!! I hope it's still the same since the new owners.
I completely owe Idlewild for finding that gem. I owe you big time!! -

I'll think of something.

they're very good and HUGE. no wonder the place is packed with cops and firemen.
i never see anyone eat at the restaurant portion. has anyone gone there? does anyone go there? i assume you get, again, cops and firemen and the bar, but the place does appear to be a ton more ambitious than the turnout they get. -
I tried the sandwiches at Mitchell's a couple of times and was repeatedly underwhelmed. Even on the "bang-for-the-buck" level, you're way better off getting a pork chop sandwich from Castillo. I don't understand the expensive restaurant part of the place either, but that's not really relevant to the sandwich discussion. I just wish the sandwiches were tastier.

I went for brunch once, and had an interesting "Salvadoran" eggs benedict. I believe it was served on a pupusa instead of English muffin and salsa instead of hollandaise.
-
Now I must have city sub today also.. damn. Will it be the italian w/ extra vinegar or the tuna? And I guess I'll stop at the comic book shop too.
-
great sandwiches on classon at glass shop - only $5, too.

The Met!

I know that this isn't following with the purpose of the OP, but if you're looking for a holdable, walkable lunch, Ginger Root's chicken roti is tasty.
-
For your basic deli sandwich/chips/soda, the guys at Lincoln Deli on Classon and Lincoln are great. Best bodega in the neighborhood.
