Bedford-Atlantic Armory — Brooklynian

Bedford-Atlantic Armory

Hello - I'd like to find out how people are feeling about the Bedford-Atlantic Armory & the proposed plans to relocate many homeless men from the soon to close (and only one in Manhattan) shelter.
I also would like to stress how important it is that CH residents should plan to attend the Town Hall meeting about this matter next Thurs June 25th.
For details please visit: http://revitalizecrownheights.org/
Look forward to hearing opinions...

  • Today's fun fact, from the New York Times, about homicide rates in the City of New York. Brooklyn has ranked number one since 2003 and, within Brooklyn,:

The bloodiest block in Brooklyn was in the 77th Precinct, in Crown Heights, bounded by Schenectady Avenue, Sterling Place, Troy Avenue and St. Johns Place.

Does this strike you as the kind of n'hood a city who cared about it's homeless population would want to place an intake center for homeless men?
  • Apparently this plan DID “strike” the Bloomberg Administration as the kind of neighborhood to locate its major homeless male intake center. This is precisely what we are trying to prevent, along with the Crown Heights Revitalization Movement, Crow Hill Community Association, Crown Heights Unites Coalition, Crown Heights North Association, the Coalition for the Homeless, the Legal Aid Society, Homeless Services United and many of our elected officials. Simply put, no New York neighborhood should be required to absorb more than its fair share of City social services facilities. Our neighborhood already does its part with 6X the median social service beds of all other neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Hope to see you at the town hall meeting.
  • Hi - thank goodness there are people out there who care about creating a harmonious neighbourhood and environment for us all

life is all about thinking of others, as well as ourselves.

It's vital that we attend the meeting next Thursday to find out the facts and decide for ourselves as to whether this is a good idea or not. It doesn't SOUND like a good idea, it doesn't SOUND like an appropriate facility to have in our residential neighborhood. That's why I'll be there next Thurs at the Town Hall meeting. Looking forward to seeing lots of friends and neighbors there. This is a good place to live! I'm proud to be a resident! We CAN make a difference, for all our sakes.

Thumbs up to crownheightsfan "newbie" - thumbs down to Capt.Planet "anonymous guest" for that unhelpful negativity. Hope you'll make it to the meeting, so you can see what a collective voice can do to make a difference!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! WE'LL STAND UP AND BE COUNTED - TOGETHER!
  • FYI, newbie and anonymous guest are both board-generated titles. neither was chosen by the poster (though, as you saw, it is possible to substitute your own title for the board-generated one). captplanet was a newbie once, and crownheightsfan may be an anonymous guest yet.
  • What is a board generated title?
  • Sweat Tea - this is a blog discussion about proposed plans for the Bedford-Atlantic Armory. No one is interested in anyone's insights outside of that topic. Please stay on target or simply do not post. We are here to promote dialog, not speeches or preaching.
  • MOD NOTE: your board title is the word that appears below your name. board-generated means that the title is still on its default setting (unlike crownjewel's or mine, for instance).

my mention of it was an attempt to forestall what seemed like hostility from crownjewel related in part to those titles. forestalling hostility is part of my job as a board moderator. (but thanks for the smack-down.)

now please carry on. incidentally, this is a topic that has been discussed several times on this board already. if you're interested in what people are feeling, please use the search function.

for the record, i think this plan blows.
  • Ok thanks. Will you be able to attend next Thursday?

The Bloomberg Administration doesn’t care about keeping its promises to New Yorkers:

Promise made: New York City will provide adequate and accessible services to all needy homeless New Yorkers.

Promise broken: The Bloomberg administration now plans to close it’s only intake center in Manhattan, and require homeless men seeking shelter to travel long distances to an inadequate facility on the Bed-Stuy/Crown Heights border.

Promise made: No New York neighborhood will be required to absorb more than its fair share of City social services facilities.

Promise broken: The Bloomberg administration now plans to locate its major homeless male intake center in North Crown Heights – a neighborhood that is already the borough leader in social service beds.

Promise made: To ease the burden of the new intake center, the City will close the Peter Young Shelter across the street.

Promise broken: The Bloomberg Administration is now seeking to reopen Peter Young and expand the facility to over 150 beds.

Promise made: The City will commit $7 million to building a track and field in the Armory for the Central Brooklyn community.

Promise broken: The Bloomberg Administration has canceled the track and field – apparently only Manhattan and Park Slope deserve these facilities.
  • Reality check: concerned citizens of Crown Heights cannot stop this, no matter how hard they try!
  • Do you have any substantial facts to back up your opinion?
  • History has shown that, individually, it's more difficult to achieve a goal (but not impossible - eg. Gandhi!) but a large number of people, united, have a stronger, louder, more powerful voice and CAN bring about changes. If we want to say "no" to this proposal after the meeting on Thursday, then we have to be sure of what we want, stay focused, and move on TOGETHER.[/b]
  • Jack Krohn wrote: Reality check: concerned citizens of Crown Heights cannot stop this, no matter how hard they try!
Seems I recall that that Community School Boards, recently abolished by Mayor Bloomberg, were created in the first place as the result of a fracas that started in nearby by Ocean Hill. History is made all of the time by folks who get involved. Others prefer to spectate. The choice is yours.
  • Agree with others' critique of Mr. Krohn's "reality check". It's pretty naive to think decisions like this are a done deal and shows a lack of familiarity with the policy process. While the ultimate decision is unlikely to hinge on the community response, to assert that it could not play a role is, again, naive.

Also, check out this recent graphic indicating where the armory sits in BK.

This will probably affect Prospect Heights and parts of Bed Stuy much more than most of Crown Heights.[/img]
