new sandwich shop in park slope
From OTBKB:
Reis 100: New Sandwich Shop on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope
Fans of Bar Reis will be thrilled to know about the new sandwich shop next door. I just got back from there because my friend, Mo, a bartender at Bar Reis, told me to come by and try a sandwich.
When I got there I met Reis Goldberg, owner of Bar Reis and Reis 100. He told me that the shop will be selling 100 varieties of small sandwiches. Reis showed me around the attractive new shop next door and even let me sample two delicious sandwiches. The bread, from Caputo's Bakery is a perfectly sized soft baguette. I had the gruyere, bacon and carmelized onion sandwich which was incredbily delicious. I also tried the cream cheese with Lemon rhubarb berry jam, also delicious. Stay tuned for my interview with Goldberg.
Reis 100 is opening soft with sandwiches at the bar but the new place opens officially on Thursday night. It is on Fifth Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets in Park Slope.
I love it already.
Seems that Mo, that multi-talented young woman, is making the jams. Here's an email I got today from Heather, a friend of Reis.
Reis Goldberg, owner of 5th Avenue's Bar Reis, is preparing to open a new shop called Reis 100, which will serve 100 varieties of small sandwiches, all priced at either $3.50 or $5.00. The offerings, served on custom rolls, specially baked by Caputo's in Carroll Gardens, will feature homemade jams and kimchee and the delicacies from local purveyors, such as kielbasa from Jubilat Provisions. Though Banh Mi is not on the menu, there are some combinations that include veal or duck pate. In adddition, there are some great vegetarian options, and a few sweet concotions, including one with a homemade Lemon Rhubarb Berry Jam. Bar patrons will be able to enjoy sandwiches at the bar, or in the garden that connects Reis 100 to Bar Reis, until the wee hours.

Are you a professional now? That seems like something written by a food critic
-
It's quoted LTS from the website OTBKB
-
i am a professional.
but not of the food critic variety.
-
holy crap that sounds delicious!
-
delicious and the $3.50 - 5.00 sounds FANTASTIC!
-
Sounds awesome. Thanks for the info.
-
Duh, just noticed that he was quoting from somewhere else! I wonder if the sandwiches are tiny at that price? Might have to check it out
-
gruyere, carmelized onions and bacon.....mmmmmmmmm.....mmmmmmm....
-
Because this is 2 blocks from my house, I will check it out...full disclosure, I will be their biggest critic because I sort of hate bar reis.
I shall report back Fridayish -
I'm definitely looking forward to trying this. Hopefully they will be open late!

Is it Fridayish yet? I NEED opinions... I might have a sammie tonight and I don't want to fuck it up.
I shall report back Fridayish -
DR - I think you need to take one for the team and just go there tonight and give us all a review.
I personally would like your review of the gruyere, onion and bacon sammie.
xoxo,

Right. In the immortal words from some guy in Pulp Fiction:
"You ain't got no problem (Flexi). I'm on the motherfucker. Go back in there, chill them niggers out and wait for (Carmen) who should be coming directly. "
Seriously, I'll check it out... give me a few dayish or thereabouts approximately. Maybe Friweduesdayish - if I don't have a hot date or an appointment with my probation officer that night. -
I will sleep well knowing that you are on the motherfucker. I will take back everything I said about you once I see a review :-)
-
Yup... when I first read "take one for the team" I thought my butt was going to hurt in the morning... anyway, I'm glad I only have to eat a few sammies and drink 14 beers to set everything straight around here.
Sleep well. -
Is Mo the surly bartender with the long face?

Doesn't sound fantastic if they're as small as they're saying- sounds expensive. I'm all for taste and I'm all for quality, but really, sounds like just another way to squeeze one out of the little guy.
$5.00 - some fancy-ass teeny-tiny sammy from this place.
$5.00 - a good-sized sammy from your decent corner deli.
Just sayin' -
"$5.00 - a good-sized sammy from your decent corner deli"
funny, I've rarely had a decent sandwich from any corner deli -
i've never had a decent sandwich from a deli.
and certainly not one made of gruyere, carmelized onions and bacon.
nor do they have 100 varieties.
i'm excited about the place, even if you aren't.
i prefer quality over quantity. -
I hope it's good, but I think the 100 sandwiches thing is a bit gimmicky. How can you keep so many ingredients fresh? Better to make 20 good sandwiches, IMO.....That said, I will wait for my report from DR
-
I have a really good deli near me, but yeah, even their sandwiches are now $7-8. I know DR likes Bar Reis, I really have no opinion, if I'm in the area I'll give it a shot.
edit to add: I agree with Flexi, better to do a few things really well, than a lots of things poorly. -
It's called marketing, people. Smell it?
I'm not saying that you don't get what you pay for- obviously this place sounds like it will have great ingredients and the sammy's will be made with love and all that, but in this economy, I doubt people will be cramming into the place to pay that much for so little. FYI- I'm not cheap- I spend A LOT of money for food of high quality.
I doubt you'll make it a regular pit stop, though. You'll have to hit Mickey D's afterwards cause you'll still be hungry.... -
Whatchuwant, where are you getting our information that the sandwiches will be "so little." All I've seen so far in this thread is someone wondering whether they'll be small. No one has actually seen the sandwiches yet.

100 varieties of small sandwiches
In NY- small means tiny. At least, that's what it says to me. -
the sandwiches up at the new BKLYN Larder on Flatbush (same owners as franny's) are between $7 and $8.50 and they are amazing. i've bought about 20 of them at this point. and they aren't huge. they said business is going gangbusters.
so yes, i feel that a 3.50 (or even $5) sandwich will do well.
i don't eat at mcdonalds.
ever. -
I am with whatchu with this one, I am all for quality also, but, if these sammies for $5 are teeny tiny and you have to buy 2 of them just to be satisfied for lunch, then that is not a deal. I can think of a couple of places that make good sandwiches, including Brooklyn Bread Company and Pollio both of which are right nearby this place.
Admittedly, they do not have 100 varieties, but, they are good sandwiches. Will check this place out though. -

Yeah, I always wonder about things like that also. -

B, you're my sandwich guru from now on, 'k? I don't eat enough sandwiches.
Anyway, not to derail this thread, but after experiencing BKLYN Larder, and comparing it to Blue Apron, I think that we're lucky to have both so close by. I look forward to seeing how BKL's inventory develops, and I certainly appreciate the evening hours. They lean a little more into the prepared foods than Blue Apron does, which I think is a good thing. I would love if they added an Almondine-type bakery in the space to compliment the sandwiches and cheeses. And, if we could get the middle eastern market across Flatbush to sell fewer general-store items and more specialty merch., then, well, I would be in food heaven! -
Right now, Carneviento (Gran Castillo De Jagua) fills my need for $3.50 -$5 sandwiches for the most part, although they definitely can't be compared to Bklyn Larder.
A pork chop sandwich from Carneviento is delicious, will fill you up, and costs under $4!
