Boycott Northlands Car Service — Brooklynian

Boycott Northlands Car Service

edited November -1 in Park Slope
If you're in Park Slope please boycott Northlands car service on 7th Ave. b/t Garfield and Carroll. They abandoned their 5 month old kitten on the sidewalk and basically said they didn't care if it got hit by a car.

(got this info from a friend... maybe others have the full story on this)

  • I have heard this as well. I don't understand why people do shit like this (if it's true, and I've also heard it from somebody I trust)

I've never used them (am an Eastern girl).
  • What happened to the kitten? Is it OK?
  • I could call you guys Nazis but it wouldn't necessarily make it true. I think folks should be careful about spreading rumors like this and affecting someone's business when it may not be true.
  • i won't be boycotting northlands.

i've found them to be the only good car service in the neighborhood.
  • The kitten was very lucky, an employee (W) of the Community Bookstore decided to adopt him.

danielle123, you are correct that calling us nazis wouldn't make it true. But this happened and Northlands DID abandon their kitten (W is calling him Red).

Red belonged to Northlands car service, I saw him curled on a chair there a few weeks ago. The female dispatcher said that someone gave Red to them but they couldn't keep him and asked if I wanted him. Last week, for a few days, Red was roaming the block, walking into several stores and hiding under parked cars. Wednesday night (I think) Red tried to climb into a Northlands driver's car in front of the bookstore. The driver dropped Red in the bookstore and told W that they couldn't keep him. He even went back to the office to get Red's carrier.

I saw Red run under a parked car it, he was nervous and almost ran into the street, I tried to lure him out but he wouldn't come. A customer managed to get him out and brought him to me. I took Red and went to Northlands to ask what was going on. The owner? Acted like he didn't know what the hell I was talking about. A driver did most of the talking. Basically, they didn't want Red so they let him wander wherever (on 7th Avenue, a very busy street). I asked them if Red was or was not their kitten. The owner said to leave him there but I refused to leave Red with someone who was endangering his life and had dumped him already. The driver told me that someone in the bookstore said they wanted Red, not true! I told them that it was illegal to abandon a companion animal, and that there was a rescue group set up across the street every weekend, all they had to do was go ask them for help. Instead they let Red (a 5 month old kitten) wander a busy avenue, I'm amazed he didn't get hit by a car.

I'm sorry but that is reprehensible. They had plenty of options to find Red a home, they chose to do nothing.

If anyone has any doubt about the veracity of this story, go talk to W at the bookstore. I've been on this board almost 3 years, a bunch of regulars know me personally. I don't make accusations like this for the hell of it. You can bet your ass that I'm going to open my mouth when someone is neglecting or mistreating an animal.
  • I'm so glad the bookstore is keeping him. He is totally adorable. I played with him on Thursday last week and fell in love with him (and he has a sister who is equally cute)

Red's not going to live in the bookstore, he's going home with W. Trust me, Marjorie will be very happy that Red's not staying. He thinks he's the King of the bookstore and doesn't take kindly to interlopers.
  • ha! well, I'm glad that he's getting a good home. hopefully they'll get him fixed, too!

marjorie can rest well now :-)
  • This is one of the weirdest posts I've read lately.

Was this on CNN? Where was I when the whole town was discussing this kitten?

Kitten killers or not, I don't bother with Northlands car service. A few times Northlands failed to send me a car within 30 minutes at 10 AM on weekdays. I walked right in front of the Northlands office, so it's not like they couldn't find me.

I call Continental and Areceibo car services or hop into yellow taxis.
  • In that location, a kitten is more likely to be run over by a stroller.
  • Caseopele.. I love you.. You are just a straighforward, genuine, caring person.
  • Thanks, veets! I really didn't want any more problems on the block, been keeping as low a profile as possible. I'm just glad that Red is out of that situation and has an amazing new home. :)

    +1 ( as a general rule )

doesnt mean i want to see kittens harmed though

Tell that to the millions of posters on all the consumer review sites
  • This isn't an anonymous consumer review site and, if it was, I would have said the same thing. The OP said she heard from a friend - she didn't have any first-hand knowledge. I replied before you posted your post - you had firsthand knowledge - that's different.
  • Thank god it wasn't a baby roach that was abandoned or this post would have been deleted immediately.
  • danielle123 wrote: This isn't an anonymous consumer review site and, if it was, I would have said the same thing. The OP said she heard from a friend - she didn't have any first-hand knowledge. I replied before you posted your post - you had firsthand knowledge - that's different.
    Garfunky posted after I explained.

Don't worry, 8thandPrez. There's still time for the owner of Northlands to try to threaten me into deleting my whole post!
  • Thanks for looking out for the kitty, caseopele!

This proves that there are still lots of sucky people out there, who are heartless! Maybe they will come back in the next life as a stray cat that no one feeds.

Your assumption that i had gotten that far into the thread is incorrect.
i responded after reading the first post and Danielles reply to it.
which boils down to boycott this place cuz i heard a rumor

I changed my post after seeing you had some first hand knowledge.

anyone can come online and say
"boycott this place i heard a rumor"
be it the truth or not.

anyone can come online and say
dont shop here that person is a nazi
be it the truth or not.

and as a general rule you would nt want someone who worked nearby endeavoring to harm the store you work at over a rumor or a lie would you ? if your store hired a nutjob who let a kitten into the street without YOUR knowledge should YOU be accountable ? surely there is a driver who works there , has a family, mouths to feed ...who probably still doesnt even know about the kitten or the commotion

theres a saying about how people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
  • I trust Caseo implicitly. She wouldn't lie just to cause a business harm.
  • Anastasia Beaverhausen wrote: I trust Caseo implicitly. She wouldn't lie just to cause a business harm.
    The op presented a rumor

Caseo presented first hand knowledge about the kitten.
    BIG difference

    but

incidentally, neither of those statements is a consumer review per se.
  • I second that!

Caseo is probably the only person, maybe outside of Carny, I would trust with my life. She's an angel.
  • even if it was a rumor (which, as others said, Caseo has first-hand knowledge)....just because somebody says "boycott this place" doesn't mean that you have to. You make up your own mind based on what you believe the trustworthiness of the post is. I doubt most of us would think "somebody I don't know said some business sucks, so I will never use them again"....they'd put some thought into it first.
  • We've had customers who won't shop with us anymore because of a certain manager. Then there are others who come back because they like the rest of us. So I'm sure the same thing will happen with Northlands.

I didn't post this incident because I didn't relish the idea of getting into this kind of thing again. But since it was posted I wanted to explain the whole situation. I told other like minded people what happened because I knew that they would be concerned. I didn't call for a boycott of Northlands, that is a decision each person reading this post can make for themselves. Personally, I will never use them again. I won't give my business to someone who neglects or mistreats an animal.
  • Thank you, darla, ana, mama, and flexi! xoxo

Good point. It's a free country. People who hate kittens shouldn't have to boycott companies that practice kitten hatred.

  • Although what some of these employees did is despicable.
I could not agree more w/ Garfunky. Not so much as in the rumor, but the consequence, be it fact or fictitious.
