Bedford President: Safe?

I'm considering taking an apartment on Bedford between President and Carroll, and wonder if anyone can give me a sense of the blocks safety there. I've already heard Franklin is pretty bad. The building is clean, and the residents I met including the super were very nice. I'd appreciate any comments regarding the neighborhood on that side of Eastern Parkway.

I suspect very few people in this area have computers or read this board if they do. Come on someone, PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG. From what I can tell by numerous visits, it's 100% populated by people of Caribbean descent. Anyone else? Anyone???? Pioneering here I come yet again... sigh. :?

How close is it to Ebbets Field over there? That's something I'd be mindful of. But besides that vague thought, I don't know much about the block.

have you tried wandering over there at night? the only time I've been on the other side of EP, other than Park Slope, was really close to the Museum on Washington and that was really nice and calm and quiet. it felt pretty safe to me. then again, it was 4 a.m.

THANK YOU for replying. I feel it's a safe, quiet nabe, but one block over on Franklin 2 young men were recently shot and killed. Most of the people in my possible new building are older and have been there for many, many years. It's not a fancy situation, but I felt ok there.

well, not sure if you're coming to the CH/PH happy hour in crown heights, but if you do, or want to meet up afterward, I'd be happy to walk over there with you and see what the area is like around 10 p.m. on a Thursday night.

Actually its more like 90%. President has a pretty large Hassidic population, although they start to peter out once you pass Rodgers. I must admit I don't spend much night time over there, but my sense is that its pretty quiet. One thing to point out is that the armory on Bedford and Union is used a LOT for filming, so the parking situation might be kind of sketchy if you've got a car.

If you read the Times article about homicides in NYC last week, it doesn't appear even with the gunplay on Franklin that statistically you've got much to worry about.

From what I've seen/heard from this board most folks on the live on the opposite side of Eastern Pkwy and closer to Franklin/Classon or Nostrand/New York. Not a lot of Bedford folks in the mix. You may want to check out the Planet PLG site to see if there are some outliers there who have an opinion. Sorry I can't be more helpful

Thanks, you guys! I wondered what that armory was used for. And I have no car, so no worries there. I ust heard today that the apt. is "on hold' until wednesday, I hope I can still get it. I rode my bike all over today checking out the 'hood.

the armory is used as a shelter for homeless men..I know the area somewhat as i live off Brooklyn Ave and drive by there a lot.. i think its like most of the area between nostrand and kingston between atlantic and eastern parkway - mostly caribbean working class, lots of older folks. You might want to watch yourself at night walking home home alone, but basically think the neighborhood is fine. The areas that are near large apt buildings tend to be sketchier I've found..this block is mostly townhouses if i'm not mistaken. You might want to call the 77th precinct and speak to a detective there, or the community affairs officer.

Are you sure that is the armory on Bedford and President? The one on Bedford and Atlantic is a homeless shelter, but I know for a fact that when the neighborhood was shut down two years ago for the filming of The Interpreter, interiors were shot at the armory on Bedford and President, and I've seen trailers outside the building on the Union Street side as well as sets on that side of the building.

A former teacher of mine use to say that women who walk the streets at night peform multiple tricks (Hint hint, wink wink)

And while you're out wandering around, don't forget to stop by Nostrand and Union, where you'll find several interesting shops, including the Tavern on Nostrand, Bagels and High Tea, a nice take out place, a day spa and boutique. All on the same corner, owned by the same owner.

Well. we're in negotiations. Bagels and High Tea had nothing to drink Monday, like no iced coffee, NOTHING, except canned juices or hot coffee, are they on the way out? It was early afternoon, so I'm assuming Tavern on Nostrand opens for dinner, as it was closed?

A lot of restaurants and delis were closed on Monday in support or because of the immigrant march.

I was in Bagels and High Tea yesterday and things looked pretty much normal. In fact, it looked like they had added another cooler up front for salads and sandwiches.

Haven't been on in a while. But do live in the area that you speak of. I'm on President between Nostrand and Rogers. I've lived on the block for nearly 6 years with no incident. Over by Franklin there may be something but as a previous poster said, nothing that would make you a satistic living over there.
