Halfcourt sports bar
This area is becoming quite the hotspot, Manhattans, Washington Commons, Halfcourt, and I believe there is another bar going into the space a door or two over from Ginger Root.
That plus Sit and Wonder and Ortine, Washington Ave is getting hot!
It's amazing how for so many years nothing has happened and now in the last few months it's popping. Let's hope Halfcourt doesn't go the same way as Utopia and PKs did, it will be a good addition the the neighborhood.

Thanks for the tip, Ben. Hopefully it'll open in time for football season. Sports bars always seem to do well, provided that they are managed properly.
The other bar, called the Flying Monkey and to be located just where you mentioned, is supposedly due to open in July. I'm sure they'll give Tacos Muertos a boost! -
As long as they have good chicken wings!
-
oh man if they have good wings my life will be complete
-
I walked by last night and it was open. Seemed kind of sad in there though. No one around. Bartender was out front smoking watching the crowd at Commons. Looked just like Utopia did. And for a sports bar I didn't see too many TVs! And no smell of chicken wings!

Love to go to local places.I also walked passed last night after holding down a stool for happy hour across the street to see Half Court empty. In SCal and DC area when you open a new place the chamber of commerce and SBA have retired people that can help you with little things that can trip you up.I have a few days off and would love to spend them with a chicken wing or two.I tried to call this place to see if they have cable and wings but their phone is disconnected and no website.Just another heights place making it hard to go there. If the people who run Tom's could bottle their customer service they should drop off a bottle or two at some places on Washington

The signage isn't very inviting either.

I actually went into Half Court with a friend the night it opened. After having a couple drinks over at the Commons, I was curious enough to make the move over and give it a try. Sure enough, it was dead as a doornail, but we met the owner Paul and the bartender Zane who both seemed pretty cool. We suggested they maybe advertise some drink specials or something to pull people in. Doubt that'll happen though. They actually have about 4 really nice flat screen TVs and mentioned that they hope to have an operational kitchen soon...although who knows how long it'll take. Unfortunately it doesn't really seem like an ideal time to open up a sports bar...but if they're still open in September, I'll give them another try when football season starts up again. Given how much I've heard about the doomed location though...who knows if they'll be able to survive the summer...but I hope they do.

I did the same. Went for 3 glasses of 3 dollar deliciousness at Commons. Then I went to check out Halfcourt.Place has been open for a week and pretty quite. Their bathrooms are new and spotless ,clean place. The bartender,Zane, told me the grand opening, including the kitchen will be Memorial Day weekend.Good beer and liquor selection, prices about average, and they have TVs as you would expect. We will have to wait and see for lots of things including the wings.I have never seen more locals look curiously inside to see what has been done.@20 people came in with smiles and wished them luck without buying a drink(?)

You mean Labor Day, right? -
I always just assumed that spot was a front for something. No business has survived there in the 8 years we've been in the neighborhood.
-
Did this place lose its liquor license? Is there a place to check that?

One uses this link to check a liq lic:

Half Court's [446 Park Place, corner of Washington] expired on April 30, 2013
-
The future location of Max Fish II, perhaps?
-
I'd gut reno it and put in a "midrange" restaurant with table service, something like The Spot or Toms. Both of these nearby places have shown that good customer service can generate good business.
On many levels, Janelle's shows how not to run a business
Skazzy has shown that a bad name, when combined with a focus on lunch (and not dinner) is a recipe for an empty, brightly lit space.
-
Once again, I agree with you about Janelle's - it's only a matter of time before that place closes, which is sad, because West Indian cuisine is an easy sell in this neighborhood. Bad service can ruin even the best cooking.
-
Washington Commons recently let is Alc lic expire out of sloppiness, and then (after being closed briefly) was able to have it reinstated by doing some begging and paying the normal fees.
Halfcourt could be in a similar situation, but it was not doing the thriving business that Washington Commons was....
I suspect I'll be able to find out for certain within the next week or so.
-
Really? Half Court has always looked busy when I go by in the evening. And it's packed to the rafters for big games.
-
They changed bartenders a couple years ago was it? Since then it's been kinda of just meh. And with so many bars around I'm not surprised they went under.
-
Newguy, I think you're mistaken. The same bartenders (Zane and Paul) are always there and they have been there for a few years.
I'll bet Half Court pulls it together, although they're missing out on what would be busy nights during the NBA (and NHL) playoffs.
-
Half Court does a great job drawing from every (drinking) demographic in the community.
Moreover, they care about their patrons to the point where they have been open several nights this week even though they were unable to sell alcohol (ie losing money).

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I'd be disappointed if that happened. And the fact that they are staying open so their people could watch games is a sign they might still have plans to return to serving drinks in the near future.

Yuppie scum-
Any idea why they didn't renew their lic?Carelessness?
I have not heard any rumors of disciplinary action.
-
No idea.
-
this is a great bar and Paul is the man
-
I hope they get their license sorted out. I just discovered this place during March Madness this year - great, no frills sports bar.
-
May 13: License now, once again active!
Welcome Back Halfcourt!
-
Reopened and busy last night!
Howdy, Stranger!
