Loud Church
Do you think it is terrible to call 311 on a church? They have a sound system and often have windows and doors open. The shouting, preaching and drums (live musicians) can be heard a block away. I feel people should not force their type of worship on others. How tolerant should one be? Sometimes I have had to turn my TV or music up louder so that I could hear it. I am a half block away on a top floor.
This doesn't only happen on Sundays. It is during the week too and some Saturdays. I often wonder how the residents who live next to the church feel.

Don't feel bad. Noise is noise, whether it's a bar or club, some moron blasting his music from a car stereo, or a church. Plenty of people of all faiths manage to worship without being this loud. Unfortunately, my experience with 311 is not encouraging, but I hope that yours does the trick.

This is a joke right?
If not ask yourself 3 questions:
1. Was the church in operation before you moved in?
2. Is the noise during the daylight hours?
3. Are you an atheist?
If you answered YES to any of the questions above, you should look for a new place to live or shut your gob!!!! -
^Jeez, that's a little harsh! WTF does it matter whether the church was there first? An annoyance is an annoyance.
I remember maybe 15 years ago there was a similar problem with a church in my area - we didn't live there at the time, but I read about it in the Brooklyn Paper. The "Jesus Christ Es El Senor" church on 4th Avenue near Dean Street had a loud sound system and services on weeknights in addition to Sundays and people in the neighborhood were complaining about the noise. I haven't heard about it being an issue for years, though, so maybe they listened to the complaints of the neighbors.
Anyway, I can understand that it would be annoying. Your best bet would probably be to discuss the issue with some of your neighbors and maybe you could approach the church together. If you have a block association, bring up the subject with them. -
As said already, noise is noise. What is sweet to some may be sour to others.
Churches get no love when it comes to infringing upon the quality of life. Especially when they can't sing or play.
Call 311 and have them do a sound level survey to ensure the SPL is within legal limits. -
In answer to the person who asked the three questions:
No it is not a joke.
The church was NOT in operation when I moved to the area.
The preaching and shouting is during daylight hours and late into the evening (midnight) on non- worship days and hours (as 311 puts it).
No, I am not an atheist and I think a persons belief has nothing to do with it.
I have been here 10 years and I am not going any where.
I am glad other folks on here understand the situation.
I just found out I am not the only person to have made complaints to 311 about this church. -
So then -- the answer to all questions is NO--- Call 311 again and join forces with neighbors....

There are decibel levels that have to be fulfilled... different restrictions for different things. A church probably falls under the same category as a bar etc. And the allowable levels differ by the time of day (i.e., before or after 10pm)
The DEP handles these complaints... though when you call 311, the police will be notified and swing by... usually a couple hours late and well after the noise is done. They will say the "case is closed, nothing found" in a letter to you... BUT the DEP will send a follow-up letter asking for details and whether or not you want them to monitor etc.
It's seemingly effective... -

But if s/he were an atheist s/he couldn't complain? Give me a break. -
