Art Gallery next to DUB Pies. Good idea? — Brooklynian

Art Gallery next to DUB Pies. Good idea?

In the space next to DUB Pies, I was thinking about, and doing prelim. homework on, making that an art gallery. I would cap the price on art to several hundred dollars only. With maybe 1 or 2 in the low thousand range. Artists would know that going in.

I'd also run open figure drawing (I'd have curtains in the windows of course).

And, possibly a drawing and painting class for young people.

And, offer portfolio counseling to all New York high school kids wanting to apply to art school.

Questions to you:

1.) Would you like to see that?

2.) Do you think, as my potential customers, it would be a sustainable business.

3.) Wouldn't it be great to have art openings catered by Windsor wine and DUB mini-pies!

  • In place of the old liquor store?

I think in theory it's a good idea, in practice i think it will be difficult to pull off. There is a lot of crap art out there so you have to be something of an expert and hip to the art scene to get people to shell out money.

Also, the low end of the art scene is probably more difficult to sell. I know artists who have sold pieces for 5 digits who tell me that you aren't taken seriously if you don't price that high. So there is that.

I do think figure drawing, painting, etc. for all ages would be good. Hell, I might even take a sculpture class for a reasonable amount. Teaching other kinds of crafts/DIY projects would be cool too.

as an aside, what's the deal with the space next to the dry cleaner on Windsor &10th ave? There used to be music lessons in there, now there are books, rocks, and a kettle in the window. What gives?

There are several little places like that scattered throughout the neighborhood. Would love to see someone come in and take a chance with a restaurant/low key bar/anything, really. Much like YogaSole did a little further down on Windsor and 11th.

While we're on the topic of random little spaces, what's up with the fire extinguisher store on Prospect Avenue? It's such a niche/quirky little store that I'd love to know the history of it from anyone that knows. It never seems to be open, unfortunately, or I'd check it out myself.
  • although i'd like to see it, honestly i don't know if there would be enough interest in the immediate neighborhood...so you'd have to be able to draw in folks from further out
  • You should do a business plan before moving forward. There are websites with free business plan samples and other websites with inexpensive samples that can help you crunch the numbers. It will help you determine how much art you have to sell and how many classes you have to have to meet the rent.

I know it sounds like a lot of work but if you're planning to sink your money into this business, you might as well see if you will turn a profit before doing so.
  • Meh. It's a nice idea, but I don't think it will make $$$$.

I'd love, love, love an eyebrow threading place in the tiny spot next to DUB.
  • I think a bar should open up across PPW from dub pies.
  • Yes pleasse!!!!!!! I want it! Told you the same when you were thinking of Prospect and 8th. Do want yay!!!!!
  • heard from very good authority (from the new guy who owns lia's ices) that an AT&T store was looking into that space.

(new lia's owner, btw, says the old owner wasn't truthful about the fact that he put sweetener in the sugar free lemon ice. which i KNEW i had to be the case)
  • isn't there a Verizon store right next door? ugh
  • yes. and a t-mobile store just closed there.
