I saw a sidewalk shrine with what looked like a lot of blood on the sidewalk as I biked down Nostrand this morning, near St. Mark's Ave. I noticed a guy sweeping up what looked like a lot of broken glass across the street. That's all I know.

Yep. Looks like whoever it was, was killed by multiple gunshots:

Bang Bang Bang-Bang.... Bang
There is no reason to move east of Franklin if you don't absolutely have to. This neighborhood fucking blows. -
Is there little wonder why no one wants to say they live in Crown Heights?
-
I dont agree with Cool. I've lived here 5 years and it gets better and better. Of course it's nice to live on a good block, away from the huge apartment buildings. The neighborhood is changing for the better.

Well, to each their own I guess... I lived over in the Alma Realty bldgs for 2 years + loved it there. Moved 3 blocks east, I absolutely loathe it. I don't see what can outweigh having your car broken into, living down the block from crackheads and drug dealers and waking up in the middle of the night to gunshots, honestly. It takes conditioning, which shouldn't be necessary. -
Subject: What about shooting in front of 95 South on Franklin?
Anyone hear anything about a shooting in front of 95 South on Franklin Av. on Friday night?
My friends who live a few doors down heard a huge fight going down in front of the bar and then gunshots. -
Killer keeps shooting at fatally hurt prison guard in Brooklyn
BY Joe Jackson and Jonathan Lemire
DAILY NEWS WRITERS
Monday, June 29th 2009, 4:00 AM
An off-duty state correction officer visiting family in Brooklyn was killed by a cold-blooded gunman who kept pumping bullets into his bleeding body, police and witnesses said.
Jeremie Kane, 30, was shot twice in the head and four times in the chest moments after he stepped out of a Crown Heights barbershop at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, police said.
Kane was already slumped over on the sidewalk and rapidly losing blood when the gunman fired his final rounds, witnesses said.
"I looked out the window and a guy was lying on the ground," said witness Ahmed Mudhasser, who lives on the same Nostrand Ave. block where Kane was shot.
When emergency personnel arrived, "The [paramedic] yelled, 'Stay with us! Try to breathe!'" said Mudhasser, 18.
Kane, assigned to the upstate Sing Sing prison, died at Kings County Hospital minutes after he was shot in front of Millie's Infinite Image Salon.
Kane had been hanging out in the barbershop for about an hour when he stepped outside to make a cell phone call, police said.
Minutes later, he got into a confrontation with another man, who pulled out a high-powered handgun and started shooting, witnesses said.
"I heard the shots," said a bartender at the neighboring Starlight Lounge who declined to give her name. "It could have been me that was killed."
Investigators were not certain what prompted the deadly shooting and have not ruled out that it was a robbery attempt, a police source said.
Patrons in the barbershop were not able to give detectives a clear description of the shooter. Investigators returned to the Crown Heights block hours later to look for surveillance video.
Kane, who joined the Correction Department in 2005, had been on leave since May 23 after filing a workers' compensation claim, a department spokeswoman said.
Kane was staying with his mother, who was too distraught to speak to reporters Sunday.

Wow- horrible.
-
Too many guns. Too many assholes that have them. Nobody saw anything. What a shame for this man and his family. People have to start speaking up to make this stop.

what do you do if you're walking down the street and a guy blue bandanas covering his head and his face walks by you briskly, looking like he's on a mission? i wasn't the only one checking him out, wondering he was up to, on Classon Ave, yesterday. perhaps it's paranoia. but, i've seen and heard what happens in this neighborhood.
and the bottom line is that it's unnerving when there's somebody in your neighborhood who you can't identify simply by seeing there face.
but do you do anything about it or just keep on walking? -
Does anyone know what happened on Franklin & Sterling today? The 48 couldn't get through; there were tons of emergency vehicles around 6:40pm
I've been noticing some sketchy activity around Happy Wok lately, and I wonder if it escalated into violence or if this was unrelated.
Didn't even know about this shooting until I started looking for information. Sad. I hope they catch the guy
edit: Nevermind, saw the answer in another thread, not another shooting but a big fire that was under control by the time I saw it. Hopefully everyone was ok -
Sad story....but is it normal to be getting your haircut at 12:45am? That just struck me as a bit odd

Not really- these shops stay open late for a few reasons. First- its a hangout (you've seen Barbershop, right?), they catch up with friends, talk local gossip.
Second- lots of guys like to get freshly cut right before they go out on the town. Dunno why, just do. Barbershops aren't like salons- they serve the male clientele, which as many of us know, are a strange breed indeed.... -
Yah, I know there's a social element to the barbershop, but I was still surprised that it was open that late. Made me think it was a front for something.....(not that it is - just what went through my mind)
-
No, its pretty commonplace in the black community for salons/babershops to be open later (including up to or after midnight). Not to mention there is a great deal of socializing that goes on. The old guys at my SO's barbershop hang out in the basement after hours and play dominos and cards until the wee hours of the morning.
The guy evidently got to the barbershop earlier and went outside at that time to make a phone call. Who knows, he could have been hanging out waiting for one of the guys working there to finish up... -
Subject: Monday Night Shooting???
I heard shots (or what I thought were shots) at around 10:15pm tonight, Monday.
It came from the East (Nostrand?)
Did anyone else hear that??
It was around 6-7 shots.
WTF is going on??? -
I don't think those were shots, they sounded more like fireworks to me.

Male and female beauty shops are open late on Saturday nights - as mentioned - you want to look as fresh as possible before going out late Saturday nite and you also want to look fresh as possible when going to church the next morning.
That's why so many local car washes are busy on Saturday night - you want to look good as possible before partying and when you're asking the Lord to forgive you for all that partying you'd been up to a couple of hours before

man, terrible to hear about the recent shootings. i just moved here. are there any spots you all would advise against walking around when it gets dark? i'm still trying to figure out the best route to my apt from the subway when coming home late at night...
-
I wouldn't worry too much unless you're involved in the activities that seem to require some sort of gun action. I would stay on Nostrand until you reach your street and then head toward your house. If you're female and alone, I wouldn't walk on any quiet street after about 10:30. You would be better off spending a couple of bucks and flagging a car service or getting a car at Catch Ah Ride car service on Nostrand near the Met supermarket. The random violence toward strangers is practically nil in this area, although there has been a rape in the past couple of weeks.

Take a cab, or move. -

Use your "sensitive eye" to figure out the safest route! = P
Sorry, couldn't resist.
I'm pretty new to the neighborhood, but I really love it so far. Now matter what, you can't make a place your home if you're living in fear. Get to know your neighbors, explore, invest some time in the learning the ins and outs.
It's the same anywhere, really. -
spnder, great advice. We have taken the time to do that, and it pays off. The people on our block watch out for us, talk with us, and like us. From the moment we moved here, about 5 years ago, we took the time to say hi, good morning, to everyone. Even the tough kids on the corner - it took a while - respond now. We introduced ourselves to our neighbors when we moved in and took a minute to talk them. Some have turned out to be great front stoop friends. Others still don't want to really talk, but I think they respect that we don't just hurry down the street, anxious to get home, not making eye contact. Take the time and you won't regret it.
Howdy, Stranger!
