Red Horse Cafe workers are not friendly and/or rude IMO

Went into Red Horse Cafe Sunday before noon. Friend ordered coffee. Worker made her coffee, and then worker's pal came into cafe. Friend asked worker for an addition to her coffee. Worker's pal asked worker a question. Worker said, loud enough for my friend to hear, "I'll tell you after I get rid of this one."

"Get rid of this one," meaning a customer. Who will probably not be back, incidentally.

This is not a typical level of rudeness, I will say. But the people who work here generally do lack the level of enthusiasm and/or charm that my wife and I receive at Starbucks. Why the heck should we support the local store when the workers there act like this?

Are these people trained? Who owns the place??

  • That's some 1st post.
  • I never heard of this place. So I Googled them.

    This is their website

    http://redhorsecafe.ning.com/

Now, would someone please tell me their address?

    Thank you
  • I don't know anything about Red Horse Cafe, but I'd be interested to know the location of the Starbucks with enthusiastic, charming workers.
  • It's on 6th Ave and 12th St. I've never had rude service there.

Say what you will about Starbucks, but the one on 7th Ave is actually staffed with nice folks.
  • I love Red Horse's coffee, but it is definitely a neighborhood place where people come in to chat with friends who work there, etc. I don't expect the corporate efficiency of Starbucks, but for some reason, I kind of like that. (And I am the first to stop patronizing an establishment I perceive as rude, i.e., Otto on 7th Ave)

I wonder who it was at the counter? As the child of a non-native English speaker, sometimes intended meaning gets a little mixed up, "this one" may have meant the drink she was working on? Or "get rid of" may have not translated well?

Sucks you had a bad experience. There's always Cafe Grumpy and Cafe Regular nearby.
  • yea i've been there only a handful of times but always found the employees to be nice and helpful.

maybe you just caught someone on a bad day
  • I agree with Vidro... likely you just caught them at a bad day/time.

I go to Red Horse because of their service. Normally, friendly and helpful. Sorry to hear your experience. You should email this same note to the owners... however, the only email they have listed is [email protected]. Not sure if that is the owners, but, rather than posting a complaint on a forum that helps nothing, email them so they have the opportunity to correct.
  • Been there several times -- nothing but average-to-great service each time. Then again, I feel the same way about the Starbucks on 7th (actually both, the one in B&N included). Both actually have great service.

The old Tea Lounge where Hanco's is now -- dear lord did they have horrible service sometimes.
  • seems to me people don't mind bad service at coffee shops because they know they'll be sitting there a while, and maybe that's the price you pay? And unless you're a "true barista" who will actually staff these jobs? Although this might be Park Slope, it is still the "McDonalds" of jobs. Guess that's what we get with our free office space, a/c, etc..
  • Seriously, nice first post. Personally, I call bullshit. I've been there and agree with the average to above average to bordering on downright genuinely pleasant attitudes of the workers there.

If you want to start talking shit (in the parlance of our times) then you'd best establish a reputation. I suggest you read every single on of Long Time Slopers posts for an essential "how to guide" on what it means to repute yourself on a message board.
  • I've never been there, but if they can be nice to DR, they can be nice to anybody. My guess is that the problem is you :-)
  • I'll take that as a compliment - plus they do serve beer.

Plus I can be super charming when I'm sure that LTS or Armchair Warrior princess aren't lurking about waiting for me to slip up.
  • Can we rename the whole Park Slope board to "Bitch about how my unreasonable expectations for service are not fulfilled by the establishments in Park Slope"?
  • I will be sure to treat advice from someone calling themselves Drunken Revival with the sanctity that is deserved!

I figured the owner may be alerted to this post, MPM

Flexi, not a fan of the passive aggressive smiley faced emoticon following the cheery insult!!:) And since I didn't interact with the worker at all, my friend did, maybe you neglected to read the post correctly.

You guys are characters, I will say that. Often entertaining, if sometimes maddening.
  • considering this is a board that seems to enjoy such conversations,
if the folks above think youre full of shit , well, youre lucky i didnt get to you first lol.
  • I will be sure to treat advice from someone calling themselves Drunken Revival with the sanctity that is deserved!
I will take that as a compliment as well. I trust that my advice here and in other forums will be followed as precisely as your conscience allows.

Passive aggressive emtion-icons is a topic I dare not broach.

A question in general, however, is this: Does anyone here deem, that being mistreated and upset, and answering not with an immediate reaction/move to correct or spotlight such mistreatment, but with rather a post on a message board, to be an act of passive aggressive behaviour in itself?

I do. And I see it here, on this board. All the time.
  • Woodsy1069 wrote: I figured the owner may be alerted to this post, MPM
    Why? Did you alert them?
  • Drunken Revival wrote: Does anyone here deem, that being mistreated and upset, and answering not with an immediate reaction/move to correct or spotlight such mistreatment, but with rather a post on a message board, to be an act of passive aggressive behavior in itself?
    Yes.

Damn. I wasn't intending to be passive.

Here are some more smileys for ya.:lol::lol:

Maybe next time you get a feel for the tone of a board before you jump in and then start crying about the responses. Just sayin'.
  • Imunna call bullshit. While I tend to agree with DR that posting something after the fact is in itself passive-aggressive, why should the OP censor his or herself because s/he might get some snarky responses? Sometimes people want to bitch. Sometimes people have an agenda.

I watched a co-worker use a fork in the break room, lick it clean, run it under the tap for a second, wipe it with a c-fold towel then put it back in the drawer. I didn't react at the time because I was shocked as shit that someone that fucking disgusting actually breathes the same air I do. Instead, I went out and bought plastic utensils. I didn't bitch about it on the nets. Til now.

    yes, not too mention an
egregious miscarriage of vigilante justice. :?
  • what the heck is a c-fold towel?
  • sweet tea wrote: what the heck is a c-fold towel?
the type that comes out of a dispenser in the bathroom - folded in three.

There. Now you've learned something new today. You can relax
  • I'm a little disturbed that this is all Sweet took from my story.
  • that is the only part i didn't know before.

okay, i'm also a little surprised that you didn't rip the fork-licker apart on the spot.
  • You never know how you'll respond when faced with such atrocities.
  • Subject: Slow down coffee drinker

In life, nothing is perfect. Lost in translation, I'll bet most disagreements are just a lack of understanding. Having said this, as a former coffee house manager, good help is sometimes hard to find.

The truth is this: If the coffee is great, the vibe smart, and the people pretty, you'll go back, time after time after time.

The Red Horse is one of those coffee houses. (12th st and 6th ave). They do coffee, art and everything else. Most people will take a lot for a great espresso.
  • Albeit somewhat pretentious.
  • I have found they are a bit off-putting...or maybe it was the Dave Mathews Band music they were playing.
