Yoga recommendation for the non-spiritual? — Brooklynian

Yoga recommendation for the non-spiritual?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I am looking to start doing yoga. I'm very interested in the physical benefits, but would like to go to a place that is light on the spirituality. Any recommendations in Park Slope or nearby? Oh, and if it's a place that doesn't get too crowded and is beginner-friendly, that's a plus too. Thanks!

  • I don't really know how you can separate yoga from the spiritual, but I recommend everyone go to Bend & Bloom on Sackett b/w 4th and 5th. You get a lot of individual attention, and I've loved every single teacher. The space is beautiful, too.
  • try the YMCA on 9th st between 5th and 6th aves.

    they are great.

not too spiritual, a great work out and the teachers, from my experience, especially on sunday afternoons, really know what they are doing.

Agreed - I love that Sunday afternoon teacher! I have an injured hip and she opens it up like nobody's business. As for spirituality - most yoga's going to have SOME. But starting with "OM" and ending with "Namaste" is not a bad thing - at the Y you can dial up or dial down your own spiritual participation without anybody noticing.
  • Second for Bend & Bloom. The space is beautiful, theres plenty of room, the props are nice and clean, the teachers are all awesome. Like ljnd says, theres an OM and a namaste at the end of most classes, but that's about it.

There is also Shambhala on Washington and St. Marks. There are a few teachers that are at both Bend & Bloom and Shambhala.

I had a bad yoga experience at the Y in PS. I am sure most of the teachers are fine but it made me realize i'd rather do my yoga in a yoga studio that is geared entirely towards yoga.
  • My wife always loved the Park Slope Yoga Studio on Union, and I think there's a whole range of styles there.

Of course, there's always Hip-Hop Yoga, Stripper Yoga, and Michael Jackson Memorial Yoga at Crunch..... ;)
  • Bikram in South Slope seems pretty straight forward.. they might say "namaste" at the end of class
