Firefox 3.5 is TEH AWESOME!

Comments

  • For all its positive attributes, I just noticed one thing that irks me about it.

They killed arrow key navigation between/across tabs.

    Say what, you say?

Like many folks out there, I keep a few different instances of browser windows open, each with a variety of tabs open in it. For example, I have a window open containing several tabs for forums and active threads for this site.

Before this version, I'd just select any tab and then just use my arrow keys to be able to jump from tab to tab (across forums/threads) and hit another key to refresh to see what's new.

    No mas.

Apparently now must mouse over and click on each tab to switch to it.

    Bah.

    ***edited to add:

I see several other threads complaining about this on the mozilla support site.

This thread offers a fix, if you like getting under the hood:

    Yay, working again.

Can't believe they killed this as a "bug."
  • you can also hit cmd+a number to jump to your tabs

ie. cmd+1 for the first tab
  • Thanks, didn't know that one. There's also Control-Tab.

Just preferred the single-key (arrows) thing, I guess...now happily restored.

I generally have way too many tabs open (I have 24 tabs open right now) for that to work for more than the first few. Toggling makes more sense for me.

so many tabs! doesn't is slow your CPU down?

No, but I'm using my MBP with 4 GB of RAM and a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo. When I use my "on the go" computer,* I don't keep so many tabs open.

*An old 12" Powerbook G4 1.33 GHz with 1.5 GB RAM- an awesome purchase for $500 on eBay with another $50 to upgrade the RAM. So much better than a netbook!
  • I installed FF3.5 this morning, and found a funny thing - my colors were all effed, really noticeable on my own photos, images that I'm intimately familiar with - too dark and contrasty, all shadow detail obliterated. One of the reasons that I use FF is because it's a color managed program, now it's doing this? WTF?

Anyway, I did a little searching, and it turns out that I'm not alone - FF3.5 is only using a certain color profile for now (will be upgraded later) and it seems as if this is not the preferred color profile for 64-bit Windows OSs. If you should have the same problem, you can either go back to the previous version of FF or you can turn off the color management in FF3.5. From a user at iStockPhoto -
You can however turn the colour management off as a temporary solution:

Go to address bar and type:

    about:config

Type: gfx into the filter box

    Click on gfx.color_management.mode

    Change the 2 to 0

Restart Firefox 3.5 and the colour management is now turned off.
It's not perfect, obviously, but I like some of the features of 3.5 so I'll live with it.
  • I have not encountered that problem with the OSX version of FF3.5.
  • Hi

is it safe to upgrade yet? Should be stable right? Im also interested in the changes from firefox 3 to 3.5.
Ill install it on my laptop first to test it, im a bit concerned about browsers :P Wouldn't want any settings affected by an upgrade. Sometimes when installing a new browser and select to grab all other data such as bookmarks etc.. it doesn't get ported correctly.

All my bookmarks and add-ons switched over seamlessly. I have had a few problems with an occasional crash since upgrading though (just the browser, not the system). But FF restores all your tabs when you restart after a crash, so it's not too big a deal. They're still ironing out a few bugs.
  • Agreed - it seems stable. No issues just yet.

If you're worried about losing bookmarks and whatnot, just back'em up beforehand.
  • get xmarks
  • Problem corrected in FF 3.5.2 -
