returning to crown heights!
Hey all. I'm coming back to Crown Heights on July 31 after a year living in Bushwick (what a dump). Before going to Bushwick, I had lived on Rogers and Bergen for a year. This time I'll be living a bit further east, on Brooklyn Ave. and Dean. The building and apartment are BEAUTIFUL, and the surrounding blocks are equally nice. Still, I'm not that familiar with the immediate neighborhood. Anyone live nearby? Any tips on food or shopping, ect. Don't worry, I'm not gonna ask about "safety" or "crime in the area."

Your best bet for groceries is the Foodtown on Fulton and Brooklyn. Its not-very-inviting exterior hides a great grocery store that has a little bit of everything. You can get fish there or try the fish market directly across the street on Fulton. That same complex (Restoration) has a Duane Reade, a Citibank, a Chase, and (if your tastes lean this way) an Applebees.
It is probably easier for you to get to Fulton Street for shopping than is is to Nostrand Ave, which is good, because the decent grocery store on Nostrand is much further, near St. John's Place.
As for other stuff, if you are vegan or vegetarian, there are a couple of great places (Ital Shack and Imhotep) on Nostrand going towards Eastern Parkway. If you are a meat lover, try David's Brisket House on Nostrand just north of Atlantic. There isn't much in the way of sit-down places for meals close to you, just Tavern on Nostrand, which is the other side of Eastern Parkway at Union St. They are also one of the few places in the neighborhood where you can grab a drink and watch the game.
Going west, you get all the Franklin Avenue places, Bombay Masala (India), the sushi spot who's name I forget, Kelso (Panamanian food), 95 South (soul food) and of course, Franklin Park. I haven't listed any of the local fast food, chinese, liquor stores, or west indian spots, mainly because there are a million of them.
Laundrymat on Atlantic between NY and Brooklyn. I'm guessing you don't need extensions or nail salons, but there are also plenty of those and barber shops on Fulton and Nostrand. That' all I can think of off the top of my head. -
wow, thanks, homeowner! that Restoration complex sounds very useful and convenient considering I'll be using the A and C trains.
thanks for all the other info. i'm familiar with the franklin avenue places from my Rogers and Bergen days...I think you're talking about Sushi Tatsu.
and luckily, i think i have laundry in my building. -
Oh, I almost forgot...
Couple of other bars on Nostrand - Starlight (gay bar that's straight-friendly), Q's Tavern (old man bar complete with Karaoke night) and Ife (young ballers bar). -
i know Starlight...nostrand and bergen
where is Q's Tavern?
Ife sounds...not for me!

You're actually not too far from some good stuff in Stuyvesant Heights as well. Right at the Kingston/Throop stop is a nice little coffee shop called T-cup. If you want a sit down place you are a walkable distance to Lewis Ave and Peaches www.peachesbrooklyn.com plus there is another coffee shop - BreadStuy and an independent bookstore - Brownstone Books on Lewis.
Olivino wineshop is on Marcus Garvey and Macon http://olivinowines.com and Tompkins ave has a nice little shopping strip a couple of blocks north of fulton with another coffee shop - Common Grounds and a restaurant, Brook's Valley Cafe. -
nice! thanks, ben.

What was wrong with Bushwick? Where exactly where you?
And yea that Foodtown is great. Comparable to the Pathmark at Atlantic Terminal. -
the architecture in bushwick is hideous, there is garbage all over the street, and my apartment was awful and overpriced. i am moving back to crown heights this weekend, but i'm currenlty located just off the Dekalb stop on the L train, in "prime bushwick."
my place, in contrast, is huge, cheap, in a secure building, and is surrounded by beautiful, tree-lined blocks. -

Damn you were deep in there man. I couldn't do anything east of maybe Grand St. I hope CH gives you a warm welcome back. Good pick up on the new place

i think grand st. is the last stop in williamsburg
and thanks! -
Cool,
Your safety-themed posts are getting redundant.
Time for a new subject or for you to move to Kansas. -
Yea, Chekhovian, like no one else on this board ever posts repeatedly about the same topic. Just because you disagree with his posts does not mean he should be silent.

Plus the post had nothing to do with safety. I wasn't being facetious or sarcastic. Dude lived deep in Bushwick, dude got a good deal on his place, I hope his return to CH is pleasant. -

Aha, so that's Q's Tavern. Been there a couple of times but never knew the name of the place.
