Post Your Best Cold Remedy Here

I've tried SO many things, but am desperate enough to try a few more.

What is your best remedy (natural or chemical) to get rid of a head/sinus cold. It's moving its way into my chest now. I fell asleep with bunches of tissues in both hands :-(

  • Vick's vaporizer.

Stick your mouth on it and breathe deep. Also 40 garlic clove chicken soup.
    Plus really really spicy soup.
  • I'll try it. Just ordered. By the time it gets here, I'll probably be well, but I am sure there will be a next time.
  • exercise. Sweat it out.

too hard to do with a cast on...........I wish I could go exercise. I tried a few hours in the sun over the weekend to bake it out, but that wasn't enough
  • Vick's Vapo rub on chest and E&J brandy
  • doctor. may not be a cold.
  • Swine Flu!!!

    Seriously.

Although that's probably no casue for alarm.
  • I don't have the flu. I'm sure of it. This is classic sinus infection. I get them frequently enough to know the difference....The flu makes you think you were run over by a truck. The sinus infection just makes you wish somebody would cut your head off.
  • There must be something you could snort to numb the pain.
  • I'm not saying the flu. You could have acid reflux or GERD. Or you could have allergies. A lot of other things out there.
  • get really really really drunk

the alcohol in your blood stream will kill all the germs.
  • Waking hours: soups
    Sleeping hours: NYQUIL
In beween hours: Capt Morgans Spiced Rum
  • I get frequent sinus infections, sinus headaches, etc. I started using one of those neti pots. I use once every week or two and it really cleans you out. They're pretty easy to use and actually feel kind of soothing. The trick is when you are doing it to relax completely.
  • The nedi pot - natural and will help you feel better.
  • 1-2 bananas (depending on size) + 1 can slightly thawed OJ concentrate. Put in blender. Enjoy your soothing cool and vitamin-loaded snack. Especially good for sore throats.
  • I have a neti pot...I use it fairly regularly. At one point I was told to stop using it because I was doing it every day in the shower and my sinus passages were getting inflamed
  • neti pots are amazing
  • If you have a sinus infection stop eating or drinking anything that causes mucus (dairy, oj, etc.) Drink lots of water w/ lemon juice in it and lots of sleep. Acupuncture is a big help also
  • thanks everybody....

I am a big acupuncture devotee, but haven't been in nearly 3 months because of my broken foot. Acupuncture is the ONE thing that I think has helped reduced both the frequency and severity of my infections (I've tried antibiotics, Chinese herbs in every form, allergy shots...you name it).

I'm going back to take a nap. BBQ tonight with lots of grilled veggies, including onions and garlic, which are both supposed to help
  • Sudafed (the real stuff, pseudoephedrine, behind the counter, not the phenylephrine they have out on the shelves now). Afrin nasal spray (or another brand of oxymetazoline, as long as it's a 12 hour preparation), for occasional use when you really want your nose clear, like if you're going out to dinner and want to make sure you can taste stuff.

That's all for symptoms though. The only thing that will make you get better is time. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you snake oil.

Bacon is only good for your soul.
  • pseudophredrine makes me jittery as all hell. I'll be staring at the ceiling all night if I take it.

Bacon, on the other hand....I see no downside in bacon ;-)
  • Subject: cold and sinus issues

Consider nasal washing as a first step. this process will help naturally and you may be able to avoid needing medications or even prevent a secondary infection. I have been teaching nose washing to my patients for 20 years, even 2 yr olds can do it.
  • Sorry can't help ya now but as soon as you feel it coming on OD with airborne. It is the best stuff. Secret to catch it early. Doesn't cure it but def lessens the symptoms and length. Hope ya feel better
  • chamomile tea works the best!
