Muggings at subway stop on 8th ave and 9th Street (above Diz

I am really concerned about the number of muggings happening at the subway stop at 8th ave and 9th street (above Dizzy's) There seems to be different assailants and different types of attacks. It seems to me that the stop is just attracting crime for some reason. I have seen cops hanging out there recently and yesterday they seem to be after someone in particular but how long can that last? Does anyone know of any way to improve the situation? Contacting the MTA? Local politicians? There have to be some cost effective measures that are reasonable.

Has anyone had any positive or negative experiences in raising this issue and getting results?

I've used that stop for the past 15 years and never seen any sign of trouble. What makes you think there have been muggings (other than the usual teen bully from John Jay taking lunch money or Ipod from another kid type of thing). IMO, it's one of the safest stations you could use. No violent crime has occurred there to my recollection.

Sounds like you're being an alarmist.

Three weeks ago a woman had her hand cut when someone tried to cut her purse straps. Then on Thursday a woman was mugged by two guys. One approached her from behind and tapped her on the shoulder. I am told he had a knife.

I saw the cops yesterday and on Friday.

I am not an alarmist I want to know how we can change this to make it safer for everyone.

I have been hearing about a number of muggings which occurred during the day there and "scared in the slope" is not being an alarmist. It is a very big and empty subway entrance and I can see how it could be a place where a mugger would wait.

Keep fighting the MTA every way you can to ensure that they retain token-booth workers.

I lost track of what the end result was, but I know they were figthing to remove the worker during late hours at the 15th St/PP stop.

A live person serves as a deterrent to crime and if something does happen, at least you know there is somebody around to call the cops for you.
  • It doesn't much apply to this stop, because the station is so large, the attendant is in the middle of the station, not near either the 7th or 8th ave entrances.
  • Do not fool yourselves... I used to get hassled in that station all the time. I used to have to be at work at 5am. Before Dizzy'z was Dizzy's the pot washer used to walk me to the token booth on my early mornings.

Now I live in PH and I have no such problems!
  • Subject: and what's up with...

and what's up with the excessive amount of (mostly) teenage boys offering/wanting metro cards around the 7th ave entrance (the unattended side)?

i'm still amazed at how poorly lit 9th St can be (8th Ave too!) and how it seems to be such an obvious safety issue but it never seems to come up....

    any thoughts?
  • given how much traffic passes through this station
it's a wonder more crime doesn't occur at this station

i'm not saying that the crime that does occur is permissible

by way of prevention, a live cop patrolling the area wouldn't hurt

i never see cops down there

i see them at nearby bars drinking a pint
    but never patrolling that station

    if you're taking a subway at 4 a.m.
    anywhere

yea. that's not a very safe thing to be doing
no matter what station you're on
    :)

i'm not saying that complete safety is not a great thing to strive for
i'm just saying that life has risks
    and you minimize them
    but they still happen

and i don't recommend that anyone with such a demanding schedule
    take a cab to work

work should pay for that taxi

    whenever possible of course

Of course shit is still going to happen with or without a person in the booth....but if you enter and exit near the token booth it seems a bit safer than exiting at a deserted part of the station, no?

there should always be a person in the booth -- nobody is arguing about that

Right but at the 7th Ave. stop, the token booth is nowhere near either entrance. Same at the 15th Street stop -- most of the entrances require you to walk down long desolate corridors.
  • I will say that I have seen a ton of cops in here over the past 1-2 weeks.

Ahhh, that's why I've seen so many cops lately at both entrances.
