St. Johns between 5th 6th

Thinking about moving to an apartment on this block, near the 5th Ave side. Can anyone tell me what it's like on the block? Is there much noise because of Southpaw, which is around the corner on 5th, or from 5th Ave more generally? Other issues? Appreciate it!

  • I live a block away from there and I can tell you I'm glad I moved here. It's a great spot to live in. I've lived all over Manhattan, from the EV to the UES, and this is where I'm staying. Everything you want (literally) within a 2 minute walk, and rows of brownstones to lead you there. An actual sense of proportion between building to street to man, as Manhattan was originally. And 5th Ave isn't loud at all, no roving groups of drunks.

    Do it!
  • I own a building on 5th avenue. Once you close the windows you would hardly hear a thing. But that also depends if your apartment has double panel windows like mine do or the old one glass panel. Most buildings have a double or even triple panel to isolate noise.

My tenants have never complained of noise level from 5th avenue.

I would recommend you make the move. No one I know had any regrets living on 5th or by 5th.
  • I just moved here 2 months ago... I could very well be in the same building you are looking as there is an open condo available right now. I love it here. Feel free to pm me if you want to talk details.

  • We've lived on the block for years, near Fifth. It's fairly quiet, although because of the families in the condo housing it's got more going on than some of the more sedate blocks up the slope. You're not going to get any noise from Southpaw. And the location is terrific. Lot's of train options, great restaurants, Key Food right there. And then there's Gorilla Coffee. My God....
  • Thanks SO much, everyone, for your comments. Really helpful. We're putting in our application today.

    I <3 the internets!
  • Good luck, Laura B - I hope that you get it!
