Anyone know what happened??

I heard 4 loud "pops" last night (before 1 AM). It's been sometime (thankfully) since I've heard gun fire so I actually thought they were M-80s.

    We had a friend at the bus stop and he heard the shots over on the corner of the mini-mart... Didn't see anything except a bunch of cops swarming the place. Someone was hurt, but he wasn't close enough... Then the bus never came.

    The was a shooting mid-block closer to Classon. The cops were out there all morning investigating. Looked like a CSI episode with no cameras and without that dipshit redheaded cop from CSI Miami.

    Of course I'm upset about someone getting shot and hurt. But just as sad for the kids who expected a fun street party today... could put a dampen on it.

    I came back home around 7:30 am, and I saw a cop cruiser and yellow tape in the formation of a triangle--around 9 am I was walking towards Grand and I noticed blood on the ground across the street one Timberland Boot and a t-shirt on the ground.

    The Block party doesn't seem as lively, which is sad but at least the kids on the block can ride their bikes and skateboards in the street without worrying about getting hit by a car.

    I've been trying all day to find some coverage on this but alas, nothing so far. What's crazy to me is that there seems to be virtually no form of media coverage of this at all, but I bet you if this happened in another neighborhood let's say perhaps "Park Slope" things would be different....

    Gothamist had it listed as a male shot at 1:02 on Prospect Pl/Classon, but i haven't seen anything else

    That's all there will be. The only reason the shooting on Nostrand 2 weeks ago was covered was because the victim was a corrections officer. There's so much shit that happens over here that gets zero press. I wouldn't know about any of it if I didn't live here.

    I asked the police officer standing at the crime scene this morning for specifics (after all the detectives had left). He said that the guy that was shot is alive, that he took five bullets (a few to his legs and the others, his groin), and that the shooting was the result of a lover's quarrel.

    ....once again, crime rarely happens randomly.

    Note: I'm not saying the person deserved it. I'm just saying that chances my own lifestyle seem to put me at very low risk of being shot.

    Exactly - it may sound callous, but it's a big city, and if you think that every shooting gets reported, you're sorely mistaken. The ones that get reported are the ones that involve law enforcement, someone famous, or are completely random - you know, the little kid or the single mom of 3 that gets hit when the thug with piss-poor aim was gunnin' at someone else. No coverage is given to matters like this, and rightly so, I think - what benefit is there to giving a lot of attention? Glorifying it even more? Leave it in the police blotter so that those that want to know can find it.

    WhyFi I have to disagree with you. I think we need to bring more attention to the proliferation of guns in NYC. I'd love to see one of the papers do a little box list of the shootings that happen on a daily basis. Not just the fatalities, but every gun injury or fatality. I think people would be amazed by the numbers.

    I was thinking of the same thing. I also find curious the resort to a gun for what at most should have been a fist fight. I recall stories from my grandfather (who was born and raised in East New York during the 1920s and 1930s) where most of the petty arguments that people currently get shot over were settled with their fists. When there is a gun around its too easy to use it with deadly consequences. Plus, the stray bullet usually kills the innocent or unlucky bystander.

    Was it really necessary for this guy to have been shot at 5 times??

    I don't think that we disagree at all - I don't oppose making the numbers accessible, I think that it would be beneficial, too. I disagree with making front page, or 5th page, news out of each incident, which other posters seem to be expecting. Media coverage? Really? I think it's asinine. Sorry, you can't delve in to something that's shallow... and that's what individual incidents are about - the mentality, not the guns.

    Of course not, but you're trying to make sense of something that doesn't make sense. Presumably, he was trying to kill him. Is there a line of sensibility that has someone pulling a gun to shoot someone once in the leg to prove a point, rather than kill? Accessibility of guns is a small part of the problem, the bigger part is addressing the notion that disagreements/conflict needs to be addressed with violence of any sort, your grandfather's fists included.

    While I don't think the specifics of the quarrel are newsworthy, I do think it's important for it to be reported when there is gun activity in a neighborhood. If altercations escalate to that level, people who live in the surrounding area should hear about it.

    Well, that's an age old problem. Figure out homo sapiens and maybe you can figure out the resort to violence. You can control people's access to guns but you can't necessarily control the resort to violence.

    I disagree. You can mostly control access to guns for law-abiding citizens. Most guns that "criminals" have are not bought on a permit. As long as there is a market for them, they will be available.

    The pcts also have web pages that will show you all the crimes that happen in recent weeks....

    Early Monday Morning of last week (July 6th), there was some really loud lover's quarrel going on that I could hear from the bedroom, I went back into the kitchen which faces the backyard and I overheard/saw a little bit of it, I heard a woman screaming (at the top of her lungs, it echoes in the back of these buildings at a guy and calling him a cheat, etc. then I heard something breaking, his hand was wrapped in a towel and then at some point the woman came into view and was hunched over gripping her stomach; I called 311, but I don't know if anything happened...

    I don't know about everyone else, but I sure as heck don't want my news about local incidents 2 weeks or even a week after they happen, perhaps I'm just a person of these Modern Digital Times, but I'd like my news and information as soon as it's available with LIVE updates. But that's just me.

    If it were new Condo going up on Prospect and Grand ,you would call the area Prospect Heights. Instead gunshots were heard so therefore it must be Crown Heights. I find you all so very amusing.

    well technically the "division" between Prospect Heights and Crown Heights is the West Side of Washington, which is the border of PH cross over to the East Side of Washington and your in Crown Heights.

    But you know with real estate agencies and everything it's all technicality anyway it's like when someone refers to 16th Street and 8th ave as "Park Slope"; it's just people trying to get more $$ in the long run.....

    I've always found it useful to assume that there has been crime in the past and will be in the future. ...but for those who think what happened last night at 1 AM is directly related to what will happen today, at say 3 in the afternoon, I guess the internet could fill a need:

    This is admittedly a bit of a derail, but I will say that it would be rather difficult for the Brooklyn Paper to report such local crime details this week, since their editorial staff decided to flit over to Amsterdam together for an oh-so-serious in-depth investigation into the borough's Dutch roots.
