good doggie daycare

I used to use Dog's Den on 12th and 5th for daycare. They have a video feed you can watch during the day to keep an eye on your puppy.

I used to use Dog's Den but my girl kept picking up stomach viruses.
And that webcam never worked.
Paws in Paradise on 5th ave at like 8th or so does daycare but on a much smaller scale which I think could be a good thing - no big huge groups of dogs, but enough to play with, and a better human to dog ratio so your pup won't be overlooked. I've never used them for daycare, but was thinking about it and went in for an interview and was shown the (pretty spacious) facility. They also have a small back yard, which is good for those calls of nature... -
I've never used Paws in Paradise for daycare but I do get the critter groomed there and have always been happy with the service and results. I know a lot of people who do use them for daycare and are happy with it.

I think the right place depends on your dog. If you have a really rambunctious pooch that likes to rough house Dog's Den or Brooklyn Dog House (not as nice of a space, but cheaper) are probably good options. If your dog will get freaked out by large groups of dogs in small spaces, Paws is probably best (it's always really mellow in there plus they have the back yard area for the dogs).
If you're going to do daycare, make sure to set it up well before leaving town. Different ones have different requirements (shots, paperwork) with some even requiring a trial short visit, I think.
You could also consider dog walkers. There are a couple (I don't have numbers, but you could probably find them here on with some googling) that take a van full of dogs to a dog run and let them play for quite a while. Gunny (sp?) and Linda are the two I know of around here that do that. Eva's Play Pups might have something like that. -
i've started looking into this for our new pup...
i've read a few bad things about dogs den (dogs coming home with giardia, super strong smells of bleach everywhere), but a lot of what i've read seems to be posted by people who also post overly-positive reviews of paws in paradise. it sort of makes me not trust either of them.
i think i'm most interested in glencadia dog camp. has anyone had any experience with them? -
Dog Abby. Hands down the best. We've used 'em all.

Glencadia is not for my dog (he prefers to be the only dog and in the house with people) but I know several folks with really dog-loving dogs and they are very happy with it and are repeat customers. I've never heard a complaint other than a dog that doesn't do great with other dogs refusing to get in the pick-up van (so it did not go).
I've also heard good things about Dog Abbey, but I don't think of that one as Slope accessible unless you have a car. If driving is an option, there are several daycare options, just do a google search.
If I were to take my dog to a daycare at this point, it would probably be Paws just because the dog to people ratio is great and I like their space and I need close to home. I live close and stop in every now and then to "spy" on the daycare dogs and they are always so happy and relaxed compared to the other places I've visited. Paws is probably kind of pricey, though.
Oh, and I know dogs that go to other daycares besides Dog's Den that have ended up with contagious bugs. It's just like kids and daycare--hard to avoid. -
Where is Glencadia?
-
^In Columbia County, apparently. I guess it might be good if you're going out of town, but it wouldn't be an option for doggie daycare (which I'm thinking about for Louie in the fall).

Glencadia is near Albany. It isn't feasible for daycare, but they do boarding and pick up/deliver in NYC on (I think) Mondays and Thursdays.
Following up on my earlier comments about stomach viruses and Dog's Den - I do recognize that doggy daycare is like kindergarten in that dogs will sometimes get sick. For me it became an almost weekly occurrence (my theory being that my dog got cranky in the afternoons and was put in the "time out" crates which I suspect weren't cleaned between uses since they were just allegedly used for 5-10 mins at a time...). Weekly was just too much for me. I was up all night frequently and even had to call out sick from my job once after not getting any sleep because my dog was puking all night.
I talked to some friends who used Monster Mutt (in Boerum Hill) for daycare and they said that their dog almost never got sick and that dog owners were asked to notify the daycare if their dog got sick there so they could tell other owners what symptoms to be on the lookout for. Dogs were also required to be kept out of daycare for (I believe) 2 weeks after they had anything contagious.
I tried talking to the people at Dog's Den about my concerns but felt like I wasn't taken seriously. I really want to like them and use them, especially since they're so close to my house and I need a good place for overnight boarding should I try and escape the city one night, but I can't risk another $600 vet bill and more time off from work.
To appear a bit more balanced - the reason I ultimately decided not to go with Paws in Paradise for daycare either was that they didn't seem to know what to do with more energetic dogs. When I visited, they had 2 medium sized very calm dogs, two doggie adolescents and some lapdogs (maltese, yorkie, bichon, poodle mixes, etc. - I don't remember exact breeds, but it was a pretty small group). My girl is a more energetic adult and didn't seem to fit in with the vibe which seemed to be more chill - sit around and be petted. The owner almost seemed to be a bit timid with my 15 lb terrier. As someone above stated, Dog's Den is for sure the better choice for a more high-energy dog.
Also - my dog walker had some pretty negative things to say about Bark & Play on 20th Street. -
Yeah, Glencadia is like dog camp to send the dog to while you're on vacation. They pick-up/drop-off in Park Slope once or twice a week. The folks I know who have used it don't have any complaints and keep using it again, like I said before, which I think is the best review. I just wish my dog would like something like that.

Thanks a lot, guys, for all the tips and info! I had a bad experience with Eva's playpups (which was surprising bc I read all the great reviews and that was the reason why I picked them...oh well...) and this time I want to make sure that my dog will be ok. I'll check out all those places you mentioned :-) Have a good one!

I never really had a bad, horrible issue with Dog's Den - I did watch one of the worker's use her fist to "push" my dog away...she didn't exactly hit him but it pissed me off to no end. With Bark n' Play, I had boarded Oscar with them one night and when I came to pick him up the next day, he'd been bitten in the meaty part of his upper front leg, was limping and NO ONE from there called me to at least let me know. They also attempted to charge me full price for the stay. I'm gonna use Caseo's mom's place when I go away in November.

I would NOT let my dog go with Eva's to Prospect Park for morning off-leash. PM me if you want details.
Toadette, that sounds rough! I was thinking kennel cough or a day of the runs. It sounds like dogs I know who just can't handle the dog beach water--get really sick every time they go back. I know at least one dog that goes to Dogs Den about 5 days a week and she is never sick, but I also think she's got a stomach of steal.
If my dog were not so human oriented, he would go to Glencadia when we go out of town or possibly Dog Abbey. Luckily we have found a sitter where he is the only dog in the home and he LOVES her, but it does limit my options for boarding. -
talking about Eva's Play pups....: I took my dog there bc I read all those great reviews. I was sure everything would go well, but it turned out to be the let down of the year. First of all, the client orientation is horrible: I emailed them - no response, I called them and left a couple of messages - no response. I finally got to talk to somebody and we made an appointment to screen the dog. The guy who screened my dog was very nice and friendly and he seemed to enjoy what he was doing. We decided to board my dog for three days. When I picked him up, he had a pretty big open wound in his nose. I asked the guy there what happened and he told he "I don't know" in a kind of do-not-bother-me tone. Then somebody came and gave me an explanation and put some ointment on my dogs nose. I understand that things happen, especially when it comes to dogs: they play, they roll over, etc. What I do not understand is that nobody told me anything about my dog getting hurt: no explanation, not even "we are sorry we will try to avoid this in the future". The fact that they did not say anything to me not only bothered me but also made them appear like they were trying to hide it from me. After these 3 days there, my dog had a terrible diarrhea for more than 24 hours...I will not take my dog there again :-(((( I´m thinking of checking out Glencadia. I contacted Dog Abbey but no response...agrrrr...

eva's is great.. my pooch has been going there for several years and we've never had a problem.

Please do not choose Dog's Den. They are terrible and they are abusive to the dogs. We took our dog there for a few months and she started acting strangely, even at home. We found out (when the web cam was finally up) that there were locking her in a crate in the basement for 3-4 HOURS at a time. I don't why we didn't listen to our instincts, but we kept bringing her there, basically because they told us she was a "bad dog" and they needed to separate her and we believed them because we thought "well, they are the professionals". The final straw was when we saw them punching and kicking the dogs on the web cam!!! The owner would not even speak to us or watch the video until we reported them to the ASPCA. After the ASPCA paid them a visit and cited them for "gross negligence and abuse", all of a sudden the owner called us full of apologies and asked us to come back. Are you kidding?!?! They do not care about the dogs, they only care about money.
