Transferring movie to dvd

I am trying to create a video montage for my aunts' 70th anniversary/90th Birthday party and many of the old family films are those reel (8 mm?) films. Does anyone know where I can get the old 8 mm films transferred to a DVD or to a computer format?

Project the films onto a good screen. Set up the camcorder. Press play.

You might try calling Adorama. It's a photo supply and print (among other things) store that has a NYC shop. If they don't do it, they might have a suggestion.

I'd take Dr J's advice - a clean white wall would do fine too.

The go-to place for artists using this format is Brodsky and Treadway in Boston. They are super nice, and probably as expensive as what DH googled (but I don't know their prices.) In the city, Adorama or Rafik or some place in the east village...Pac Lab

I think I will go the white wall route only because I don't trust mailing off these films and them getting lost.
It also gives me a chance to see them. I just love looking at these movies - all my aunts and cousins had those really cool boufant hairdos and cat eye glasses.

Like OpossumQueen says, try Adorama, they are on 18th and 6th Ave in the city. They do some conversions to DVD i know but not sure what formats they take

I'm being late in responding, but I have used Duggal on 23rd between 5th and 6th Ave(http://www.duggal.com/). They will take regular 8mm or Super 8, with or without sound, and provide any format you want. I got the transfers done to Mini-DV because I wanted to do some editing, but they will transfer directly to DVD if you want. It's better to call them first so you can discuss your specific needs with the person who actually does the transfers. It can take a few days to 2 weeks, depending on how busy they are.
