Ruckus on 16th Last Night?
This should probably be on the WT forum but all that traffic seems to go here anyway...
Did anyone else hear a lot of glass shattering, banging and car alarms last night on 16th between 8th and PPW? It was sometime between 2am & 3am. It sounded like someone was smashing car windows but they all seem to be intact this morning. I noticed a bike that got mercilessly trashed (tires kicked and bent down) and a few items that were on the curb for trash collection were smashed. There was just so much noise. It was so scary.
Anyone else hear this or see anything?

yesterday afternoon there was a shirtless moron setting fireworks off on your block, the jerk was throwing them in traffic and on top of a rental truck.
the idiot is probably one of the skateboarders who are being pushed out of the circle.
Last week one of them was stabbed outside 1 PPSW, the idiot challenged three teenagers who were passing by, he did some Karate moves and one of them simply stepped up and stabbed him , he was taken to the hospital and is now at home .
The police grabbed the three teenagers , who are from Linden Blvd. -
Thank you for the information Minister!

What does Hamilton's post have to do with what happened at 2-3am? Nothing. Surprise, surprise.
Dottietron, did you call the cops when this was happening? -
nothing more then the police chased a group from the circle at 1:30am and they were more then likely the cause of the commotion, as fireworks were discharged on 16th street right after they were chased.
Sorry I burdened you with an update on serious crime in the neighborhood.
But don't worry, the cake shop or double windsor ,as you cutely refer to it , was spared. -
so why no mention of the police chasing a group (were they hooligans?) out of the circle in your original post? You write about fireworks in the afternoon. "Interesting" new "facts".
Double Windsor is going to be the new name of the bar, it is not as I "cutely refer to it". I look forward to not seeing you there. -
"interesting"
Yes - but it was addressed to Dottitron... advising that there was a problem in the afternoon. I assumed she could figure out the connection between that and the 2am problem that she mentioned -without going in to great detail.
Were they hooligans? Of course not - they were women wearing other women's underwear.
You can relax, as I doubt I would bother going to the cake shop, if it ever opens. -
Did OP look out the window and call the cops? Probably more effective than posting on a message board the morning after.
-
How about the 4am battle of testosterone lasting a couple of hours last night on 16th. They were even so kind as to threaten to 'come after me' for knocking on my window to ask them to keep it down.
They offered bloody harm to anyone else walking by too though, so I didn't feel too special. -
Just call the cops! Why would you possibly want to get involved with people who would threaten to come after you?

The timing of all of this is unbelievable for me and very disturbing. I recently posted (pasted below) about my imminent move to this very block. IS THIS AN ANOMALY ON THIS BLOCK OR PAR FOR THE COURSE? Please provide objective input and again, thank you.
*original post 7-7-09* Hello. I am new to the site and was hoping for some input. I am looking seriously at a 2 family brick home on 16th St bet 8th Ave & PPW (about 1/8 down the block from Farrell's) and very close to the much anticipated establishment on the corner (Double Windsor ?) It is very close to Prospect Park and the F train and these are very important items to me. I've driven the neighborhood extensively and it looks great (very much like traditional PS). Is there anything I should know -particularly a potential negative- before finalizing any decision. I am posting on the PS site and the WT site due to the proximity to both borders. A generalized critique of the area would be greatly appreciated. Also, is this area fully gentrified and where is it headed? Thank you much.
MOD NOTE: keep the "neighborhood advice" to the original thread please

^Lets use some common sense here- if this is par for the course do you think a resident would have posted a thread about it? I'm becoming a crabby park-sloper...
I lived two blocks from that location for a year and had absolutely no problems. I also parked my car on that block often and it was never damaged (well, not more than is usual for park slope) -
Ditto what Carmen says.
Plus, if you're too scared to move here - don't. -
Let's not get off track. "Too scared to move here" is a ludicrous statement. Due diligence when you're spending well over 1.3 million entails checking every aspect and when the exact block that you're buying on is the subject of these types of negative posts, you would be a fool not to inquire.

You haven't been around this board long enough (unless you've been lurking for years, which I doubt) to realize how often the "is my block safe?" question comes up.......over and over and over again. Do your due diligence by walking on that block at night and seeing if YOU feel safe. Research crime statistics in the area (extremely low). Some jackasses on the street is both rare (despite the 2 posts) and not exactly life threatening. If the original posters are concerned, they should call the cops while it's happening rather than come here and just post about it.

One of my good friends has lived on that block for 9 years. I consider it a very safe area, with friendly people. I would move there in a heartbeat. Also it's convenient to a lot of amenities like restaurants and concerts in the park, and a block from the subway.
That being said, this is New York. Nothing is 100% safe. Incidents like the one described do happen, on that block and elsewhere. My friend has had to call the police on a physical fight in her building (not directed at any strangers, it was between 2 "friends" fighting), and she's also had a crazy guy try to follow her home on the block.
Generally speaking though, I've never heard her mention any red-flag incidents like drug dealing or gang fights, I consider that block fairly safe. -
Flexi makes some good points (a frequent event). There is no substitute for getting off the internet and out of the car and just walking around. Before we moved to WT I walked every block of the neighborhood, at different hours, shopped at the supermarket (crappy Key Food) and ate at the local restaurant (Laura's)
You can get crime statistics off the NYPD website
http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/crime_prevention/crime_statistics.shtml
You'll be in the 72 and close to the 78 (15th St is the boundary) -
....forgot to add my lack of sympathy for your $1.3M+ purchase.
Maybe I'm just cranky today (probably), but this is an extremely safe part of Brooklyn. I've been here 12 years without incident - even though I've walked around later and drunker than I should have been. Alone and female, too.
But, really, if these stories are going to scare you off, don't ever leave your house....and then hope that you don't die of a household accident instead -

Agreed. Take the subway there, walk around. Ride the train to work or your usual commute and see how you like it. Visit the local bodega. Look for laundry places (if you need them.) Go AT NIGHT and take a stroll. This isn't rocket science. -
We did look out the window and the police were called...and showed up after the destruction had ceased.
We did not get a good enough look at them to help with a description of any kind (there is a large tree in front of the building that was obscuring parts of the view) but I know we were not the only ones to hear it because a woman yelled out the window at them.
I do consider this to be a safe block. I was not looking to stir up any debate. My intention was to see if anyone saw/heard anthing. There are dozens of posts inquiring about low flying helicopters and such so I figured this would be a good place to get some info.
I love 16th St and all its quirks. -
I have been chuckling at this thread as I lived on 16th St between PPSW & 8th Ave for many, many years. Boy does it sound calm now! No motorcycle "club" members hanging out on the north side of the street, no one passed out on a stoop all day on July 4th, no 9th Ave Boys driving around in a station wagon looking for trouble, no gang fight breaking the window of the Post Office when it was on the corner across from Ferrell's. Speaking of which, there was an epic evening in the late 70s when a fireman got roaring drunk & tried to drive his car down 16th - on the sidewalk. His buddies got wreckers to block off the street & eventually subdued him. Now that was a noisy night!
-
thanks for perspective Salix.
...the sky is not falling. -

Don’t be such a skater−hater.
Cops down−played resident concerns that a crew of skateboarders practicing flips and jumps near Bartel−Pritchard Square were turning their quiet nights into a living hell. -
Subject: skater haters
Be well aware that many of the skaters at BPS, are good kids, well intentioned and attended, and are just having fun with their boards. Please lets make sure to not equate skateboarders as ill-doers. It's their neighborhood, too. -
Crowlish you are correct thank you for this.
ANd god bless WIndsor Terrace! -
Great memory Salix! 16th Street is much more tame than it was in the 80's. I remeber saving my brother from getting his coat stolen by the NAB (ninth ave boys)! The block can still be noisy from time to time, mostly loud car stereos and a ruckus every month or two..Right now the only thing that bothers me is the ice cream truck...10:30 pm like clockwork!
-
I used to live on 16th between 6th and 7th Aves. Our apartment had floors so slanty that my kid's trucks had to be parked on one side of her room.
One night my ex went out to take out the garbage and came back inside and said, "There are 16 cop cars out there." I looked - and holy crap, they were there, all right, lights whirling. No sirens. There was a drug dealer across the street. No more.
There was a bodega on the corner of 7th Ave and 16th St that got shut down for drug dealing as well.
But Java was there. It was always there. It will always be there.
Howdy, Stranger!
