Has anyone used them. group of friends hoping to use one on a Sat/Sun in the near future. I guess I am just hoping to know what time to show up to hold one? I doubt I just show up at 4pm and an empty one is just there. They seem to have very few. I could buy a cheap grill but have not yet

  • If the weather is nice, people start snagging them around 7:30 am. Not kidding. I'm out there then everyday with my dog and there's always one person from the group that got the lucky job of just sitting at the table to claim it.

Not sure how they clear out over the day, but that's how it goes at the Picnic House and by the 9th St Bandshell.
  • Oh, and if you want a free grill the park can be a great resource. After a nice Saturday, esp. a holiday weekend, there are grills galore left behind (which is just a small part of the mounds of trash). The 4th of July weekend, I saw some dog owners snagging some nice small grills while out early.

And make sure you bring plenty of sturdy trash bags if you don't plan on taking everything out with you. There are very few trashcans and they are all overflowing by midday Saturdays, so having your own bags to at least contain your trash and leave by the cans is the right thing to do.
  • thanks!!

If anyone has a clue which is better 9th St, Picnic House, and near the rink, that would be helpful too. thanks again
  • I kind of like the area by the picnic house. You can grab shade and there is a bathroom (if you dont mind a line). The area by the bandshell gets SO busy!
  • Throwing a birthday picnic for my little sis tomorrow - I drew the lucky straw to get up there at 6 am to (hope to) snag a table, and maybe a grill. It's madness. We've done the same thing each of the past two summers, each year we've gotten up there earlier and earlier - we haven't been able to snag a grill yet. We learned after the first year and went to Lowe's and picked up a great $50 charcoal job on wheels.

So, yeah - good luck! And if you see a tired-ass looking dude over by the Picnic House holding down a table in the rain, say hey...
  • I took a walk, I only saw one (maybe 2) grills by the Picnic House, are there more I overlooked?
I think I saw 6 or 7 by the bandshell. I have someone going before 8am hopefully that is enough
  • I bought a large grill for 20$ at a dollar store a while ago. It survived many BBQs, it's easy and light to carry, and it was definitely worth the investment. However...it is now resting on Mougar's roof as my landlord was not happy about my illegal parties on my own roof.

Anyway, what I was trying to say was that you can pick a cheap grill up to be safe. Also, you should come to our very own Brooklynian BBQ on Sunday at 1pm!
