Lox isn't smoked, it's cured (like gravlax). It's basically raw salmon that's been packed with salt and sometimes other flavorings (like sugar, dill, etc.).
It's an acquired taste, but good lox can be delicious.
  • I'm on board with the lox, but any of the other fish you can get in a good bagel shop = forget it. Chubs, bunker, whitefish, whatever the hell else, I'm not touching it.

I'm going to give that peanut butter/miracle whip thing a try though. I'll report back.

    Hey, chubs are awesome!
  • I think I'm gonna make me a peanut butter and miracle whip sandwich when I get back from the gym. I got myself hungry just writing about it. Avoid white bread with this sandwich, though. It doesn't work.
  • What beverage do you suggest with this sandwich? And how thickly do you spread the PB and MW?

Well, the above was just my own personal opinion. I'm sure I like a lot of stuff that others find unappealing.

I like it with apple cider. Goes good with the peanut butter. Also, it sounds strange, but V8 goes great with it too. I don't like to spread either too thick, but the pb should be thicker than the mw, because the mw has such a strong flavor. I also prefer a darker green variety of lettuce with it.
  • Okay, I just had a peanut butter and Miracle Whip sandwich on whole wheat with lettuce and pepper, accompanied by a pickle and V-8, and I'm afraid it really didn't work for me. In fact I feel somewhat nauseated. I wish I'd had a sharp white Cheddar instead of the PB...

    I shouldn't laugh...
  • I fell for the old PB & Miracle Whip Sandwich Newbie Hazing Ritual, didn't I!
  • Sorry guys. I guess it's not for everybody.
  • No need to apologize! I'm all for trying new things.

Although I, uh, won't be having one of these again.
  • Better than peanut butter.. nutella!

Actually, I think the best thing ever is hagelslag, which I discovered in Amsterdam a few years ago. If I remember correctly (which I very well may not -- I was in Amsterdam, after all), the name is Dutch for "chocolate hail" -- you may think it's just sprinkles, but hagelslag is REALLY FUCKING GOOD real dark chocolate sprinkles, not the plasticky pseudo-sprinkles you get at ice cream joints here in the U.S. They make other types too (white chocolate, milk chocolate, caramel, fruit etc.) but the dark chocolate is the way to go. You put a little butter or peanut butter on your English muffin or toast so the hagelslag has something to stick to, and then you sprinkle liberally and devour.

    YUM.
  • Ok, my secret vice: a salt bagel toasted then topped with Jarlsberg and fresh ground black pepper and melted under the broiler or in the toaster oven. It just doesn't get any better!
It's much more accessible than the PB and MW, I promise. And it goes equally well with coffee or beer!

Variation: one slice of tomato under the melted Jarlsberg on each half of the bagel
  • I am definitely trying that.
  • okay.
#1. lox are gross. correlative = smoked fish are gross
#2. wtf exactly is miracle whip?
#3. i'm mildly allergic to peanut butter. ergo tres peu pb+j
#4. i'm deathly allergic to hazelnuts. ergo no nutella

ok. with butter. i'll bring that on thursday

    since it's cinnamon. that's hot
    something cool would be good
    like green tea ice cream?
  • quijibo wrote: okay. i'll try some. i'll get some from key food. what brand?
Miracle Whip is actually a brand name. It's mayonnaise for midwestern white folks. I like to use it in sandwiches, sprinkled liberally with fresh ground pepper.
quijibo wrote: what are Danish go Rounds?
They were a 60s toaster-pastry version of a danish, a sort of stiff coil with hard frosting. Terrible, really, but fun to eat the coil in a circular fashion.

Except cinnamon pop tarts are really "brown sugar cinnamon" and very sweet rather than hot.

If I were going to be all postmodern and serve up pop tarts as a dessert I'd top them with cardamom ice cream (I soften vanilla Haagen Dazs enough to stir in freshly-ground cardamom seeds and then refreeze ... good with pear tarts).

yea. right next to the pecan pies.

flashback: my grandmother used to make this milk jelly.
    it's called manjar in ecuador

she'd stir and stir milk under a slow boil

    basically condensed milk with cinnamon

See, now, that sounds disgusting. Don't be hatin' the Miracle Whip - it's called 'Miracle' for a reason.
