shame - the new crime deterrent?
i was off from work on friday and had planned to move my car in the morning before the parking ban went into effect, but then it completely slipped my mind (i remembered around 3:00 in the afternoon). when i went out yesterday to collect my ticket, there was a giant, neon-yellow sticker on the rear passenger window that said, "this street couldn't be properly cleaned because this car was in the way," or something to that effect--but there was no ticket. is this the new policy--no fines, just a mild dose of public humiliation? i have never failed to move my car for street cleaning before, so maybe this is what they do to first-time offenders?

no, they do that sometimes. i can't figure out why they do that v. tickets ....those things are a bitch to get off. you might need some GooGone or other stuff to get the whole thing off (they sell it at Tarzian and other hardware stores)

I've seen these as long as Ive lived in the city (3+ years) so they're not new. Ive managed to get a ton of alternate side tickets but I've never gotten one of these stickers,I think its just random. -
The stickers are such a bitch to take off that that in itself is a form of punishment.
-
they are definitely not new. i believe that the street cleaner carries the stickers and uses them when he/she is able. tickets are issued by nypd. you were lucky if they missed you. and, yes, they are a bear to remove making them punitive.
-
Maggiepc is right; it means the street cleaner got there before a traffic agent did. You got lucky, because you still could have been ticketed if Traffic had made it by after, even if the sticker was already there.
-
Actually, you should wear it like a badge for a while. It shows your indifference to authority. You rebel you!
-
Go to the nearest car wash. They will remove it for you. right after your car leaves the car wash someone will come over with a razor and just peel it off.
-
The trick to removing them is boiling water. Trying to get it off dry is an exercise in futility. The last time I got one I used the water and managed to get it off in one piece. I threw it on a pice of contact paper and went in search of a traffic agent. Slapped that shit on his windshield - definitely took the sting out of the summons.

I actually had a "neighbor" leave a note on my car once because I hadn't moved for alternate side (no ticket, but a nasty note). It was hilarious. I took a picture of it and sent it in to passive-aggressivenotes.com.
-
huh. i've been here two years and have never seen one of these before--but i'm definitely not the most observant person on the planet. the weather reports i'm looking at are promising rain every day this week, so i guess i'll just try to scrape it off during the next downpour. even if it never comes off, though, i'll take it over a ticket any time.
AB - HAW! i bet that "neighbor" wouldn't have left any kind of note if he/she had scraped up your bumper while pulling out from behind your car, but mess with the street sweeping? that calls for a hand-written scolding. -

BINGO!!! I really hope they put it on the website. It was all kinds of awesome! There was a part in it that said something to the effect of "EVERYONE'S sick of you not moving your car!" Apparently, my car is the subject of much neighborhood debate. I suppose this person also leaves notes on all the trash that people just throw on the street instead of walking it to the cans on either corner.

Um, isn't this vandalism?
I guess the city is allowed to vandalize private property? -
when the government does it, that means it is not illegal

Or when Obama says he won't raise taxes and he does anyway. And the tax stimulus, that is supposed to help the average tax paying citizen, who never sees the trickle down that was supposed to benefit them. But will only the huge bill we're going to get if Cap and Trade goes through. It's all politicians across the board who promote self serving, ridiculous statements and plans that come into effect once they're elected. None of them live up to their word for the common man. None. -

Wait, wasn't this thread about stickers on the windows of people with parking violations? -

Yes. It started about stickers and then someone started talking about the government and Dubya and I was pissed off about something with the government and did a small rant.
Now I feel slightly better, but am still pissed off at the government and it's takeover. I just get nervous thinking the same boobs that paid $500 for a hammer and toilet seat will govern our healthcare and lives. And that to pay off the stimulus package and bailouts and other costs will cost every American $80,000 each.
Let's just move into the mountains and start over again!
OK. I'm done for now. Thank you very much. -
I think he's only raising taxes for people who make more than $250K so you may not be affected.

Shhhhhh....... That's not one of the Fox News talking points (maybe they should be called shouting points).

REPUBLICAN ALERT! -
but, it can't be a republican . . . republicans love the magic of trickle-down.
somebody has to pay taxes, hon, 'cause this country is broke and things cost money. i for one really like 24-hour subway access and tri-weekly trash pickup and similar civic goodies, and i don't mind paying for them. it's true that politicians are politicians are politicians, and i feel kind of bad for anyone who thought obama wasn't a politician, but only kind of. it was sort of hard to miss. anyway, the mess he inherited wasn't his doing, so he shouldn't take all the flak for what it's taking to fix it. and of course you are free to move to the mountains any time.
on a happy note, my car is now sticker-free (thanks, rain!). -

We need term limits ASAP.
And lawyers should not be allowed to be politicians (or at least there should be an equal amount of another profession represented). -

not sure how term limits would help.

anyone with an annual income over $150,000 and combined assets, including real estate, in excess of $2 million should be banned from running for public office.
finally, anyone who does not agree with me shall get the guillotine
