Tom's Diner Treat
Subject: Tom's Diner Treat
This morning at Tom's I was honored to meet Congressman Major Owens, representing our district 11 for 24 years. He was having some bacon and eggs with his son Chris Owens who is running for Congress in November. It was kind of strange to see that sparkly Congressional pin, hearing them plan campaign events with Cindy Sheehan, and returning to session on Tuesday to vote on the Bird Flu Bill etc. All amidst the early morning bustle of Tom's.It may seem that a US Representative is so far removed from local issues, that may be true but that one vote can make a difference on so many critical National issues, especially come Jan. 07 when hopefully Dems take back the House.

busterbunny, i must assume, is also a child of major owens. or a campaign volunteer. or simply deluded. or blinded by the lapel pin. or all of the above.
i have to agree with bb on one point though: it sure warms the cockles to see that an old pro like major owens, even as he is working hard to turn an elective democracy into a hereditary oligarchy, can still take the time to have some bacon and eggs at tom's like the rest of us. probably even sits to shit too.
bb, do you know if he had toast? -
All I know is I'm going to run for congress so I can get me one of them sparklies.

no just a voter. owens is one of the few to stand up to the "hereditary oligarchy." the sparkly pin comment was slightly tongue in cheek, it just made it easier for me to confim it was him before i said anything.

owens is one of the few to stand up to the "hereditary oligarchy."
So the Bushes do it and that makes it okay for the Owens to do it?
You see what a disaster Shrub is making of things. Major Owens is a good representative. But what has this Little Corporal (tm) got to do with it? The whole thing leaves a bad taste in the mouth. -
i talked with chris owens on saturday at the park pl. block party.
i have about 400 pamphlets that he had dropped off on my stoop if anyone needs one. [/img] -
Nah, just stuff 'em down a storm drain.

sorry none left - they are all stuffed in the sewer drain.
next week is 5th ave. fest. so it might be a good chance to get more. -
jeez. so much angst. one should vote according to a candidates platform. i find it hard to believe that the owens family is some sort of oligarchy, holding court in prospect heights.
if you can do a better job than run for congress. -
y'all pathetic. there is no better man or woman running in that race than chris owens.
his dad is supporting his race and means its an "herditary oligarchy?' give me a break. he's running against the best funded congressional candidate in the country, David "Real Estate Developers Hate Me, its True, Despite All their Stuffing of My Campaign Coffers" Yassky. and against 2 machine hacks, and Yvette Clark who is also a political daughter with a platform that seems to be "I'm a woman, so vote for me."
meet Chris, talk with him. then come back here and tell us what you think. -

you're right. he is the best in the race, and that's what's pathetic--in a district with as many smart, committed, active people as we have, the best person is someone whose foremost qualification is his father's name. (come on, he's never even served in the state legislature or city council, not that those are prerequisites.) nothing against chris personally, but hereditary office isn't good for democracy. given the competition, i wish him--and us--well, hope that he doesn't take our votes for granted, and that if he wins, he'll be as good as he looks on paper. and that he won't one day try to hand the job to his son. -

Is this based in your personal interactions with Chris? He was one of the first people I met in the neighborhood, and of all the smart, committed, active people we have in this neighborhood, I think he is the hardest working. He's also probably the most warm-hearted as well.
The image that I always have of Chris is working for the Norman Siegel campaign. Norman Siegel is a civil rights lawyer who ran against Betsy "There will be no use of eminent domain in the Atlantic Yards- Bruce told me so" Gottbaum for Public Advocate. I gave every ounce of my energy to that campaign, and when I was completely spent, Chris still kept working. And he was working for someone running against an incredibly lame incumbent who had the support of every single elected official.
Every elected official, except one: Major Owens did not support Betsy. I don't like the fact that Chris is running for his Dad's seat. But I support Chris because I know him.
But we are going to hear much much more about this campaign. It's an extremely interesting race, and before long, we'll all know about Nick Perry, Yvette Clarke, Carl "Just because I have supported Clarence Norman for years doesn't mean I'm as corrupt as him" Andrews, and David "Just because I have taken donations from developers who may or may not have been implicated in what may or may not have been arson attacks, that doesn't mean I'm in their pockets" Yassky.
It's bad that Chris is running for his dad's seat. But the other candidates have baggage as well, and I think supporting Chris is a no-brainer. -

How can you be so cavalier about Yassky? You dismiss him as a recipient of developer money. Have you ever taken a look about what's he's done in the City Council? Or what a visionary he is? Or what an amazing advocate he could be for the needs of the community?
He's busting his ass, taking nothing for granted, That's what I want in a Congressman representing me.
Take a look at what he did to make Brooklyn Bridge Park a reality? A public/private partnership. Affordable housing along with market-rate housing. A fantastic development in an area that needed it.
We'd be lucky to have politicians that had the ability to make the Atlantic Yards project modelled after what happened on that project.
He has a big uphill battle to win this race, but it's a shame to have such intelligent people on this board, who actually care about the issues, to discount such a worthy guy.
Don't know much about the other guys, but they represent "more of the same", that I know. -

Since being laid off a few weeks ago I've found myself with a lot more time to check out places in the neighborhood. I went to Tom's today for breakfast, and if theres anyone left on here who hasn't been, go now! I was floored..
