  • Subject: clarification

I just want to clarify that I never once suggested that Councilwoman James is/was in any way negligent in her response to the aftermath of the block party. In fact, she's been nothing but helpful and informative about the events that transpired. Like the rest of us, she is very concerned about the safety and well-being of every woman, man and child who live in Prospect Heights and Crown Heights - and is devastated by the double homicide of two young men.

My post (suggesting that people on the board contact the Councilwoman) was intended to get people involved in their neighborhood - to ask questions, to get information, to find out what we can all do to make sure that this never happens again on our block. I thought that contacting the Councilwoman would be a good beginning. In my post, I was simply confused about some of her responses to my email, which is one of the hazards of an email exchange. Those questions have been answered:
yes, permits were issued for the block party (one for a sound system, one for use of the street); no, there won't be any permits issued for St Johns Place for some time to come; and yes, she was aware that there was a block association (I misread her email with regards to this last query.)

I sincerely hope that out of this tragedy comes dialogue. It's not about race or gentrification - it's about the welfare and future of all of our children. We all live here together and our kids attend the same schools. Community Board meetings resume in the fall...

I also can attest that this is incorrect -- I arrived home around 9:30pm and shut my window to reduce the blare coming from the block party sound system. I walked to the corner store around 10:00pm and crossed Washington/St.Johns, which was still filled with hundreds of people, of which very few appeared to be leaving. The party was definitely going on at least til 10:00pm.
    That's all.
  • There were more than two shots fired as well. Perhaps it was a separate incident and didn't result in injury or death, but the 8 shots I heard were not fireworks - I've been in this neighborhood long enough to know the difference.
  • BKChickie wrote: Can ParadeRest vouch for howdareu?
    Not at all.
  • so, howdareu, I figure the only option you have is to PM Paraderest your identity and get him to re-vouch for you.

...or the board has effectively called BS.
  • annnnd.....the copters are back. Seem to be focused on Washington (or maybe its Franklin)
  • Well said, d-Miriam. At your suggestion, we also
contacted Ms. James and received a supportive and
sensitive reply. We believe she is a terrific asset for
our neighborhood and believe she will make sure this
    doesn't happen again.

I can't stop thinking about the two young men who
lost their lives. I am also remember that less than
an hour before the murders, our family and several
friends stood and chatted near the exact spot of the
    murders. Very frightening.
  • So - howdareu - the person who "works at the 77th" - is bogus?
  • As the block association president shouldn't Mr. Jones have a community meeting about what happened? At lest post a letter to the block so people can understand his point of view on what happened. He silence will not help things get better.
  • Those 8 shots were not fireworks. I heard them from my apartment loud and clear. The occured in quick succession, although them seemed to go on forever.

If you look at some of howdareu's earliest posts, they didn't seem to suggest s/he worked at the precinct at that time, although it seemed like s/he knows people there, possibly from the community council meetings. I suppose it's possible that s/he was hired since then.

...it is possible that Paraderest does not know that one of his co-workers is posting. Which is why howdareu was encouraged to PM Paraderest. Something along the lines of "hey, I'm Officer Jones, the guy who always gets assigned the car with the dent"

...as a result of which, Paraderest would post: Whoops, I know howdareu afterall.
  • True, but the tone of howdareu's early posts is of an outraged resident of the block. And the NYPD has a policy that doesn't let people police their own communities, so if howdareu lives here, s/he can't be an officer at the local precinct. S/he might be a civilian employee; I'm not sure of the policy with regards to them, although the department has sharply cut back on those employees over the past year or two.
  • yes, all of this supports a verdict of "We call BS"

...this jury member is on board, but just wants to give howdareu the opportunity to mount a defense. You gotta have faith in the system.
  • The fireworks were not on St. John's at all. Yes its very true the event was over 2 to 3 hours prior. There was one DJ set that was not affiliated or hired by the organizer. The street was open. A lot of people were on their way home after 8:30 and there were still a lot of people there.

The staff did tell the DJ to pack up and he did and the police were close by. No one person can tell a group of people to go home a little faster. Mr Jones doesn't attract a rough crowd, his people were the adults in the middle of the block. It was a joyous event throughout the whole day.

Some questions that are being asked and some some comments are pointing to blame. Nobody wanted a terrible incident to happen after any event and prevention was made. Incidents like this happen all over the world. No one could have been at that exact place way after 11 pm to stop one person who had an intention to harm those 2 individuals.

There was no permit denied ever and there was no misleading that it was a child day safety event/ bock party like stated on the flyer. The permit only says block party.

This is a blog we all understand that, so opinions are opinions, and facts are facts. God Bless and I hope all those who would like to attend the block meeting can send me a message, and give me a date where most can attend. We we were thinking a Saturday afternoon or evening.

While it the organizers may have had fine intentions, I'm more interested in how a reoccurance of the disorderly behavior (aka drunk loud people) will be prevented in future years.

What will be done differently in future years?
What requirements should be put on the organizers to ensure some order?

...there is also the pesky matter of your claim of working at the 77th pct.

P.S. I'm all for block parties. ...unfortunately they are sometimes much harder t arrange than setting up some music and a bbq.

It would be alot easier to find the car withoutthe dent.

    +1

...but doesn't only the CO get to drive that car?
For some reason, I don't think we are talking about a white shirt.

Myself, Mr. Jones council members and the head captain would love to have a meeting with the block and the neighborhood.

Just how many Captains are assigned to the 77, howdareu? You refer to a "head captain" in your previous post implying that more than one captain is assigned to the 77. In fact there is one. He serves as the Executive Officer. To push this a little further, there is no such thing as a "head captain." Who exactly are you refering to?
  • HAHA!

  • ...the evidence hearing has begun.
  • This how we can end this any day this week at 4:30 you can meet me at the 77th precinct. Come to the front desk ask to speak to the community affairs officer. I won't give you any officers name here but I would love to speak to you in person and answer all your inquiries.
  • i live on st. johns.. i saw a flyer in my hallway that said there was going to be a child safety day. nothing about a block party...

So are you saying you are the community affairs officer?

Hey ParadeRest, does impersonating an officer in writing online carry the same penalties as doing it in person?
  • Look at it again, it said child safety day/block party there is a flyer left on a few poles on the block and several buildings.

You've been provided with an anonymous way to have a fellow officer vouch for you, yet have chosen to not mount a defense. How come?

...we've reached our conclusions as to why.
  • Defending myself would be the reasonable thing to do because you are right, I am being attacked. It's ok, because once again this is only a blog. Myself and quite a few actually do community work.

We don't come to a blog and complain time and time again. If we want something done we go do it. Those on here who actually do anything to solve any problems that are on important topics..kudos. I respect them.

A few folk who stopped coming to this website (and I did for quite some time now) the comments on here just reminded me why.

People want solutions and answers to problems behind a computer screen, it's not that easy. Leg work must be done. So we can go back and forth until we are all tired, and a few of us as always are going to pound the pavement and actually get work done. God Bless.
  • So you're abandoning your story that you're an officer at the 77th precinct then?

Being attacked? For just asking a few questions? Are you Sarah Palin?
