Shoplifting

Some of the Duane Reade stores in New York County must have a different policy because there are numerous criminal cases of robbery and larceny from Duane Reade stores. They almost always involve a security guard who chases after the perpetrator and often gets injured. I do not see a lot of cases like this from other similar stores.

the duane reade outside the West 4th st subway station has a security guard posted near the entrance/exit. haven't noticed if he is armed but I can't imagine they post him there to Not stop shoplifters.

The store I worked for has guards at larger locations (including the ones here in the city.) its supposed to be a deterrent, but they're instructed not to actually *do* anything but look scary. -
I saw a shoplifter walk out of that same DR at 7th & Flatbush a couple of months ago, the impression I got from the store staff was that he's a "regular"...I think he was cleaning them out of advil that night.

About three years ago, I served on a grand jury in Manhattan, and one of the cases we got was this dirtbag who was brazenly stuffing his overcoat with DVDs at a Blockbuster on the Upper West Side. When the dirtbag exited the store, an employee chased after him and tackled him on the sidewalk. As they were tussling, the dirtbag produced a meat cleaver and started chopping away at the poor employee. The employee survived the attack, and I assume the dirtbag was eventually sent away for a long time, but I can't see how a few DVDs and a shit job at Blockbuster is worth risking one's life.
I believe it. -
I just was walking home from work up flatbush. Saw a guy with a bag run out of duane reade. Two employees chased him down the block and wrestled the bag out of his arms. Once he let go the DR employees walked back to duane reade and the thief continued on his ways seeming quite pissed off.
Guess they are getting more aggressive about keeping the body wash and advil out of shoplifters hands. -
Cashier to woman hurrying towards exit: Hey! What are you doing?
Woman: What? I ain't done nothin'.
Cashier: Where's the bag of beer that was on this counter? You took it.
Woman: No I didn't! I didn't! I don't got no beer!
Cashier: Yes, you do. You have it. Now give it back.
Woman: I don't know what you talkin' about! (runs out the door, holding something under her jacket)
(older male employee walks in)
Man: What was that?
Cashier: She just stole from us, Mike! Follow her!
Man: Nah, calm down. It's not a big deal.
Cashier: She took your beer!
Man: What? (runs after her)

That's a super cute video, but what would have happened if the man pulled a knife on that lady? I hope that other Subway workers don't feel like they must jump on top of robbers.

Well getting bitten by a shoplifter is better than getting urinated on by a shoplifter...I think...maybe not. I don't know.

Shoplifter Trys To Avoid Arrest By Relieving Self
A 25-year-old Myrtle Beach woman who was arrested and charged with shoplifting urinated on the ground and was transported to the hospital after claiming she was having a seizure. Krystal Lynn McMillan was detained by an employee at Ulta Cosmetics in Myrtle Beach, after McMillan allegedly put cosmetic testers and other makeup in her purse about 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to a Myrtle Beach Police Department report. The incident was captured on surveillance video. After police arrived and McMillan was placed in handcuffs, she began to scream for her boyfriend and said she needed her medication. She threw herself on the ground and said she couldn’t breathe and was having a seizure. Emergency Medical Services was contacted. McMillan started spitting on the floor and said she needed to pee and “had explosive diarrhea,” according to the report. She squatted on the ground and appeared to force herself to urinate, leaving a pool of urine on the ground. When EMS arrived on the scene McMillan was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. She was released and booked into jail. She was charged with shoplifting first degree and breach of peace.
