  • I use all car rent a car, because they always have cars.

I don't know if they are cheapest, but they give me the least hassle.
  • If you are leaving town the cheapest is outside of the city

Take Metro North to Stamford and there are Hertz and Avis across from the train station. I never had a problem returning the car to the city for no extra fee.

if you are going the other way there is a Budget, or used to be, just on the other side of the GW bridge, or there used to be.

Newark Airport might also be an option

this is probably the easiest thing to do as well- driving out of the city in the summer SUCKS
  • Yeah, you guys are definitely right about leaving the city and going to CT or NJ to pick up the car, its easily $200 cheaper! All car rent a car is pretty inexpensive, just checked them out. Also speedy rent a car was cheap too, I think they're over on 7th ave. Anyone ever heard of them? Drive out of the city in the summer does SUCK.. but it will be worth it
  • Yitz Car Rental on McDonald Ave in Kensington, Brooklyn is reasonable.

Weekly rates are $50 / day (plus tax, plus you'll need insurance, but if your credit card covers that, just pay with your credit card and you can skip the insurance cost).

Weekends, it ranges. But because it's Hasidic, they don't allow pickups or returns on Saturday. That means they tend to give you a competitive rate to rent on weekends, to rent Friday through Sunday at a cost-effective rate. They charged me $50/day for Friday + Saturday for that reason, but I think it ranges. Call them and see.
  • re: Insurance remember there are 2 types of insurance you get, liability, that covers you, and the loss damage that covers the car you are renting.

Yea you can use the loss damage waver from your credit card company, just check with them before you do so you know the coverage, and make sure it also covers loss of use, but don't skip out on the liability insurance unless you have coverage through an existing insurance policy. In NY the coverage is absolute minimum, like $10,000 and if you rent in CT there is no liability coverage at all.

FWIW before we owned a car we had auto insurance for none owned auto for a couple of hundred bucks a year (through USAA). That turned out cheaper and easier to use when we rented.

Also be sure to check for discounts on renting through any membership organizations or employers. We used to get a good rate by using USAA membership and we get the "government" rate as my wife works for SUNY.

I'll also throw in that when we drove any distance out of the city I always liked having the peace of mind of renting from one of the nationals. Ya rent a car and it breaks down in Maine, who ya gonna call?
