Who would you call about kids at a construction site?

I live right next to this:

(which, incidentally, seems to be on hold, or at least nothing's been happening there since before I moved in a month and a half ago). My front window looks over the fenced-in front of the construction site. A few minutes ago I heard a bunch of little kids going ape over the Mr. Softee truck and looked out the window to see several kids, none of whom could be older than six or seven, screeching their heads off on the inside of the construction barrier.

That hardly seems safe even if there isn't much going on with the lot at the moment, right?

Who should I call about this? 311? Scarano?

  • as much as i would have loved to wander a construction site as a kid, i have to believe that there's some kind of law about adequately locking up a site to keep the wee bairns from injuring themselves. so 311 seems like a good place to start.
  • i love peeking in those things when i was a kid going around construction projects in manhattan. yeah dangerous but hey i love watching it!!!!
  • I would definitely call the precinct (the main number not 911) and inform them that children have been playing at the site. From experience I can tell you that the smallest piece of wood can have the longest rustiest nail in it. Also there should be some sort of permit or security notice on the site that should list a phone number and I would call them too.
  • Thanks, all. I called 311 and submitted a complaint to the department of buildings, and they're supposed to send and inspector. I think I'll still call the precinct too; if it gets the cops to peek in once in a while that wouldn't be a bad thing.
  • Okay, I just got off the phone with the precinct. The officer I spoke with was really nice and said he'll make note of it for their patrol officers, but he also asked that I call them next time the kids are there so they can send an officer over to talk to the kids about how dangerous it is. So I'll definitely do that as well.

If I see the kids with their parents sometime, I'll try to strike up a conversation with the parents too and let them know.
  • I had posted something about this on the general BK board... but I still can't get over the fact that these kids parents let them play out in that lot...

I bet their parents don't know they're getting in there!
  • I'm not sure it's that big a deal. I'm sure I would've been all over these construction sites when I was a kid.

Yeah, me too. Actually, when I was 10 I almost got buried alive at a construction site climbing around on a big pile of loose dirt that collapsed on me while I was on it. Sooo... I think I'll err on the side of being paranoid here. Little kids just don't have a lot of sense about this stuff, you know?

Sometime at happy hour I'll tell you the whole story of how I almost drowned in a septic tank when I was six too.
