anyone want to split a CSA veg/fruit share with me? — Brooklynian

anyone want to split a CSA veg/fruit share with me?

Prospect Heights is starting up their CSA.

I know it's a bit of a trek for many of us, but is anyone interesting in splitting a vegetable share with me? I'd be up for a fruit share, too. The portions are supposed to be big enough to feed two "enthusiastic vegetable eaters." Pickups will be at Namaskar (643 Vanderbilt) on Thursday nights from 4:30 to 7:30.

The pricing is based on income, so I'm looking for someone in the same bracket as me ($30-$60K). We would each pay $180 for 23 weeks of veggies, starting in June and running through mid-November. A fruit share would run 20 weeks at $80 per person.

Read more about the details at http://www.prospectheightscsa.com. If you're interested, let me know!

  • What's a CSA? Is it like a food coop? I went to the website and couldn't find a definition for it. We may be interested in sharing a membership. Could you tell me more about it?
  • CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. Basically, people sign up and pay for their share either up front or in installments and the farmer delivers food to a pick-up location once a week. The vegetables are all organic. Some, but not all, of the fruit is as well.

As a members, you are able to support a farmer who uses his land in a sustainable way. The farmer can rely on your financial support, which allows him a sense of security and ability to better absorb risk.

This CSA goes one step further in how it prices shares. Members with higher incomes pay a little bit more to help subsidize those with lower incomes.
  • Meeshka,
Sorry--I wasn't logged in when I wrote back. Just wanted to let you know that was me responding. If you have any other questions, let me know.
  • Hey, Bean... Sorry it took me so long to get back to you sooner about this. We are still interested in the CSA. The only problem is that we won't actually be living in CH until the summer (buying a house takes SO long). I'll check in with you then and see if you're still interested in splitting the membership. Thanks!

I live in Crown Heights and have been dreaming of starting a CSA here. I'm involved with former Methodist camp near New Paltz that is about a year or two away from starting an organic garden. They'd love to hook up with a neighborhood in Brooklyn and do a CSA.

There's a great community garden on Bergen Street bet. NY and Nostrand that could serve as a gathering place/drop off point for food.

    Any interest?

Instead of asking why not venture and find the interest. Just look for the socks camouflaged by sandals

I'm speaking with Just Food. We're probably at least a year away from being able to start the garden upstate, so I don't want to get ahead of myself.
