Nice post carivore in the midst of not apologizing and certainly not complementing.

Roseweed just remember that for NYC Krypton will only insure the anti-theft device for one year no extensions.

Nothing is fail safe, but, so far, my bike is still there. Good luck!
I am curious though - can bicycles be insured under a renter's policy if it is stolen outside the home?
to the OP - I am really sorry about your bike. -

I think it depends on your policy. When you set up your policy, talk to the agent to make sure it covers items like this. When I got my policy for example, I made sure my laptop would be covered even when it's not in the apartment. You can also pay a little more to make sure it's covered for "replacement cost" not actual value. That way, if your model is discontinued, you can get a new one of whatever the current equivalent is. -

For those who care, the bike theft story was featured on Friday and Saturday on News 12 Brooklyn. Heather Abraham interviewed me for about 40 min and not surprisingly it was edited into a sound byte -

I have not had any problem accessing the link, but I've been told some people cannot access anything on the site if they do not enter a cablevision subscriber number, though I have not had this problem, and I do not have a subscriber number.
A couple good videos related to NYC bike theft and mention of the new Park Slope Food Co-op bike valet are here - http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52158
I also read that an area in downtown Brooklyn has a designated bike parking area that is supposed to be secure but I do not know the how true this is. Many people want this to become more of a standard throughout the city instead of having to use multiple locks for bicycles. As much as I think each person has to protect themselves, I think that improving aspects in communities that relate to helping crime prevention is something that needs more support.
Looking out for each other at times, and contributing ideas to a creative process is more of a sign of an advanced civilization more so then insulting people you have never met while hiding behind a computer. -
Sting operation anyone?

Carnivore wrote: I agree with everyone about the Y not being responsible for the OP's bike, and for the folly of leaving it protected by a cheap lock. However, there's still no excuse for the police to refuse to look into the crime. You're blaming the victim, and it's akin to blaming a rape victim for wearing a short skirt. There's one person at fault here, and that's the person who stole the bike. It's the job of the police to take a report at a minimum and treat this as an actual crime. It's very interesting that some of the very people who are so outraged by minor traffic violations by cyclists are so quick to dismiss a clear cut crime like a bike theft.
Wow! I know I'm weighing in a bit late on this, but Carny's totally right on this. Moreover, for those who think it's a petty crime, but attack the OP for not using a better lock due to the prevalence of bike theft in NYC, don't you see the inherent inconsistency of your posts? In the process of criticizing him, you acknowledge how frequent a crime it, all the while dismissing it as a serious crime.
<rant>
Yes, each individual bike is relatively cheap, but in aggregate, given the prevalence of it, it's a huge money making crime in NYC. If I remember correctly, there was a bike chop-shop that got busted a few years ago with hundreds of thousands of dollars of stolen bikes in it. I don't doubt that there are plenty more out there. It's the attitude that it's not a serious crime that allows it to continue. </rant>
Anyway, reconfigure/Jason, sorry to hear the news, and if you want to get replacement bike, the Times-Up (http://times-up.org/) office in wburg have fairly regular sales of bikes they got from the Police auctions that are usually fairly cheap. Or you can just try going to the auctions yourself. -
