USPS closing Brooklyn locations
they say the branch on 7th Avenue and the one on PPW in Windsor Terrace have the same zip code (how could that be?) and that means that one of them will definitely be shut down.

They do have the same zips...I live in the slope, someone I work with lives in WT and she also has a 11215 zip code
-
How odd, how did they give 2 different areas the same zip?
Anyway, I much prefer the Windsor Terrace post office, i go out of my way to go to that one if I have to go to an actual PO, and i live right near the 7th Avenue one! -
The thing on 9th street is a Post Office. I think the things on PPW and 7th Ave are "retail outlets"
-
Sorry, when I need to go to a "retail outlet" for stamps or to mail something, I go to the retail outlet on PPW, not the one close to me on 7th Avenue
-
Crap! I was just at the one on PPW 10 minutes ago. I seriously hope they don't close.
-
There should be a way to protest this. I'll try digging around
-
actually the USPS is shutting down a lot of things...jobs, etc.
did most of you know that north of union is actually 11217 and south of union is 11215? i don't think it matters much if the 7th ave office is servicing 11215 or 11217 one of them is closing and since 9th st can cover more of the PPW group i'm guessing that's the one that's going while 7th ave will continue to cover 11215 and 11217.
did this make any sense to anyone? -

I don't think the 7th ave office is servicing anyone, as anyone who's been there lately for any reason can attest to.

Although it sucks to lose a post office, we can at least take some consolation in the knowledge that some of those "workers" will lose their jobs. :x -
the PPW workers are actually really nice - the lines are not long and it's super convenient. it's not full-service, but it's very convenient for people at this end of town

amen to that...I've needed stamps for a couple of weeks and have tried to go to the 7th ave post office 3x...the line was out the door all 3 times, at different times of day. I gave up and ordered the stamps online. And this time I ordered enough to hopefully not have to deal with the post office for a year or two ;-)

CVS also sells stamps behind the counter. And it's open 24 hours!

Yes and Yes to the above. And the line out the door was for a 'normal' business day. It's a Horror Show Deluxe from December 1st onward. How can the USPS close such busy facilities? What they need is more of those automated machines like they have on 9th Street. -
here here to the automated machines!!! Why they can't strike up a retail partnership w/somebody (DR, Rite Aid, Ace Hardware, ANYBODY) to house these units in non- Post Office locations? And why is there only ONE in all of PS?
-
The 7th ave stamp store is also the ugliest storefront on the avenue. There is really no point it is there except to prolong the payroll of the civil servants that "work" there.
You can buy stamps from a machine and ship (postal too) from the Park Slope Copy Shop Center. -
it is a pretty ugly place and the service is horrible! I feel sorry for he people who go there to ship something, it takes them forever. Personally, I print out shipping online and box things up myself, the 9th Street PO has a box where you can deposit your boxes and packages that need to be shipped out as long as you have the label and postage on them.

great idea! -
i'm having a hard time understanding why you would want anyone to lose their job, especially people who do not choose the conditions under which they have to work. if you think it's oppressive standing in line, just think of how-much of a horror it has to be behind the counter. you should be directing your anger at the postal service, and whoever runs this contract station, rather than the people who need this job to survive.
-
postal employees, esp. those in the branches, have great benefits and pretty easy jobs, comparatively. Given the atrocious attitude of every single employee I've ever encountered in the 9th St. station and the piss-poor way they do their jobs, I have a very hard time mustering up empathy for the postal union members.
-
If they close any branches, won't the others just be more crowded?
I think the 7th Ave branch is okay, but that is comparing it to the one on Atlantic and Bedford (?) that I used to have to use (god forbid you had to pick up a package there on a Saturday. I do not miss that chaos.). That being said, isn't the USPS kind of a joke overall at this point? -

I knew that comment was coming eventually.
When I was younger and worked a menial job, I worked my ass off. It was stupid and boring, but I was determined to be better at it than anyone else. I have absolutely no patience or sympathy for someone who has a solid paying job with good benefits yet seems to think that their only obligation is to show up. People who show up to work and don't expect to work don't deserve their jobs. A 10 year-old could do a better job of working the postal window than the troglodytes they have in that office. It's maddening. And the mail carriers are even worse. Having lived all over New York through the years, the local postal service is the absolute worst I have ever experienced. I take care of almost all my bills and banking online now, and get everything shipped UPS or FEDEX (and ship everything UPS), so that I don't have to deal with them. So yeah, I won't be sorry if these people have to find other work. They should take a lesson from the awesome and professional staff at the UPS store on Flatbush. -
FYI...Brooklyn Paper reports PS/WS are not losing their crappy post offices. Mail away.

great! the WT post office is NOT crappy. It's not full service (no PO boxes, package pickup, etc.), but the lines are never long and the people are generally pleasant. Going to the PO there has never been a nightmare in 12 years that I've been going there. -
Every zip code should have it's own post office or "retail outlet".

I agree Flexi, if I absolutely have to go to the PO to mail something, I will go to the Windsor Terrace one even though I am only 3 blocks from the 7th Avenue one. They are much nicer and more c9ompetenet there than 7th Avenue. -

not any at all in Brooklyn:

I will admit that I too go to the WT PO, rather than 7th Ave or (GOD FORBIT) 9th street. But, it still feels as if I've rolled back into 1976--long lines, no automation to speed things along (for gods sake, people, give us a machine!), and just general inefficiency.

The self-serve stamp machines in post offices are also disappearing. I've heard it's because the money that's been inserted collects in the machines and isn't removed for days. The government loses interest when the money isn't deposited. So screw convenience.
