Moving to Prospect Heights — Brooklynian

Moving to Prospect Heights

A friend of mine is trying to get me to move to Brooklyn with him at the end of August and I came across this forum and thought it might be a good resource to ask some general questions. I would be moving from Astoria and am quite comfortable there.

1. I work in Midtown and its about a 10 minute walk from Grand Central to my office. How is the commute?

2. Is a broker needed to find a good place? What should I expect to pay for a nice(not luxurious) 2BR?

3. Is parking a huge problem as it is in Park Slope?

4. I am planning on taking a trip to see the neighborhood - are there any parts I should avoid? I would like to be as close to subways and nightlife as possible.

Thanks ahead of time!

Where exactly at you moving to? And welcome!

Hey Mods - maybe there should be a global thread for each neighborhood.

I don't work in midtown but when my husband did he would take the 2/3 (at Grand Army Plaza or Bergen St.) to Nevins St. and catch the 4/5 to GC and it was about 30-40 minutes.
You also have the option of the B train at 7th Avenue (and Flatbush).
You might want to check out what available and the timing by using Hopstop.com

I am not sure about the broker question but if I think a 2BR would be anywhere from 1800-2500. You can check out http://www.rentometer.com/ to get an idea about the rent in this area. If you search through Craigs List make sure you add North Slope to your search of Prospect Heights.

[quote="jt4266"]. Parking here is not as bad as PS but we have more ASS days so it can get to be frustrating.

I happen to love it here. Personally I don't think there are any places to avoid in PH. I tend to shop/eat/drink more on Vanderbilt Ave but many new places have opened on Washington that are worth the trip also. Thre seems to be a bar to suit everyone's taste here.
Many of the posters here get together for Happy Hours, picnics, bike rides, etc. you might want to check out the next one.

Good luck and welcome to the hood.

No kidding. Poster should do basic research and then people would be more open to answering these questions. Posting the same thing in multiple boards and asking that people take the time to put some thought into and type out some answers is extra lazy. Figure out where you might want to move first, do some homework and then come back.

Check HopStop. 2/3 and Q/B are the trains we have best access to.

    2. Is a broker needed to find a good place? What should I expect to pay for a nice(not luxurious) 2BR?

2000 and up. I'd see if the landlords are paying for broker fees or if you can negotiate a lower broker fee in this market.

    3. Is parking a huge problem as it is in Park Slope?

Not as bad, and parking lots are cheaper as well.

    4. I am planning on taking a trip to see the neighborhood - are there any parts I should avoid? I would like to be as close to subways and nightlife as possible.

People here disagree, but I feel the nabe is best within 1 block or so of Vanderbilt. I wouldn't be too keen to be east of Underhill, or too close to Altantic Yards if I had a choice.

Thanks this is a great piece of info for me. It seems like a lot of listings on craigslist for Prospect Heights may actually be Crown Heights with cross streets like Classon and Bergen.

Yeah, there's a lot of disputes as to where PH actually ends and CH begins. Personally I think of PH as bordered by Washington, Atlantic, Flatbush and Eastern Parkway. Definitely look at maps to see where the locations actually are if they give real cross streets.

I've been in PH for over 5 years and love it even though I am moving. Vanderbilt has a lot of options for food and nightlife and there's also some tasty food and nice shops on Flatbush, Underhill and Washington as well. It's a safe neighborhood. Even the slightly sketchier parts due to lack of trees or big industrial buildings are pretty safe. Enjoy!
  • Yes, Washington is the eastern border but I feel that the streets start to change in appearance east of Underhill. I'm sure there are great places to live east of Underhill or even Washington, but if you are looking for the epicenter, stay as close to Vandy as you can.
