Trash makes the News — Brooklynian

Trash makes the News

  • The dumpster is in the Nethermead? What brilliant mind thought of that? That is not where it needs to be.
  • I agree it's ugly, but it will hopefully garner some attention and get people to do more than just complain about the trash. And, is there a dedicated fund for more trash cans? Cause I'd be glad to send in a check.
  • Perhaps the park is missing the point. 1000 people attending park gate with no permit, who leave their trash everywhere, are not going to take a walk to a dumpster or to a trash can. But perhaps the dumpster will help the volunteers who clean up after people who are so special and so entitled that they get to litter in front of the police.
  • The lack of trash cans/dumpsters is definitely part of the problem. The few cans (they buy more and then they get stolen) available fill up and then folks either toss their trash next to the cans or just don't make the effort. The wind and animals help scatter it overnight and you get the filth that is Sunday and Monday mornings in the park.

Putting dumpsters in heavy bbq areas could help. It's at least a start, but as long as people breaking the various rules (where to bbq, trash, etc) there are going to be plenty of folks who leave their trash wherever they sit.

Here's the attitude of some of those people, summed up by a teen who brought his dog to off-leash. He actually picked up his dog's poop but then just tossed the bag on the ground. When asked why he left it, he said "they'll pick it up". This actually happened. He wasn't sure who "they" were, though.
  • Damn. I wish they would have specifically called out MIH
  • Unfortunately, everything is going to get grittier in a city and stae-wide budget crunch.

Has anyone else noticed how much filthier the subway platforms are, even in the tourist trap areas now?
