Parking a Uhaul - Safe Place?
Comments

4th Ave isn't a residential street.

Is there fairly safe parking there? I've never noticed. Third seems sketch. And I was thinking about those factory areas in Gowanus. There are always trucks there.
-
Yeah, you should be okay on 4th. If you can find a spot to park it.
-
u-haul should have given u a lock with the truck to lock the back door. why not use that?
-
Locks are easily cut...

I rented a U-haul from the place on 4th Ave. They did not give me a lock and told me no place is save from tickets overnight. I garaged it. The overnight garage for an over-sized vehicle cost more than the 24 hour rental.

Scary but true story....when I was getting ready to move into my old co-op on Prospect Park SW, the people who sold it to me were getting ready to move out early on Saturday morning. Since I lived on 11th Ave previously, I walked over Friday night to make sure everything was set for me to get in and start cleaning/painting on Saturday morning. They said "sure", because they had loaded the truck and were leaving at 5:00 am or something ridiculous like that.
Saturday morning I'm getting ready to head over and they call me asking for some more time because they needed a place to stay until the police got back to them...someone stole their U Haul with all their stuff in it when it was parked right by the building!
The odd thing was that it was parked on Terrace Place, which is a residential street and the cops didn't say anything about that.
My advice is just be careful if there's anything in it and make sure you're insured. -
Are you afraid of getting a ticket on a residential street? Just suck it up... chances are you won't get one. But I don't understand why it would be illegal. The only issue I can see is that it is a 'commercial' vehicle... and there are commercial vehicles parked all over the city at all times... overnight and otherwise.
Oh wait -- do you have a trailer?! Yeah, they have to be attached to the car/truck. -
Commercial vehicles, any vehicle with a commercial license plate, regardless of the size of it, are not allowed to be parked on residential streets overnight. If a commercial vehicle is parked on a residential street after 9 pm at night, it can be ticketed and/or towed. You will be ok (ticket wise at least), if you pakr it on a commercial street (4th Avenue, 5th Avenue, etc.), but, I wouldn't chance it since it is a Uhaul, people are going to break into it thinking there are goodies inside.
My husband drives a car (SUV size) with commercial plates for work and he keeps it in a garage. -

Feel free to risk it, but I learned my lesson last time I left a rented Penske parked overnight...

The stuff survived! I parked on a residential street too.
