More Banh Mi in SS?

Word on the street is that the former Slope Suds hair salon on 7th between 14th and 15th will be... another Vietnamese sandwich shop...

Can we hope for a Nicky's or Ba Xuyen outpost?

  • I love Nicky's!! The best service and tasty pate on their version of banh mi
  • that would be awesome. Hopefully not $6.50.
  • Baogette. Baogette. Baogette.

They already have two branches in Manhattan for the gringo bahn mi market. Deeeelicious.

Ba Xuyen is still#1. 8th Ave in Sunset Park, near 42nd St.
  • OMG yes yes yes!

Speaking of Slope Suds... they got slapped with a stop work order earlier this week. Seems to have been removed.

    I'd pay $6 for a well stuffed 1 footer.
  • second Ba Xuyen...

Although we will eventually get decent bahn mi in the slope, the experience of Ba Xuyen is unmatchable.
  • People are actually excited about this? Because I'm really sick of Hanco. I've never had bahn mi before, so maybe it's just not that good, but I hope this new place is cheaper and has more variety (like more appetizers.)
  • bahn mi isn't about appetizers AT ALL, it's an Asian sandwich shop. Getting anything else, aside from a drink, is really not the point.

canyon, maybe you just don't like those type of sandwiches. which is fair, but because you have little experience with it, you shouldn't be so negative about this new shop on a food thread that does appreciate them
  • Mamacita, I think you misunderstood me. I was saying, in my opinion, Hanco's isn't that great, and since I've never had bahn mi besides Hanco's, I was hoping maybe it's just Hanco's, and that there are better bahn mi shops out there, and hopefully this new one is better. I'm sorry that I'm not enlightened enough to know the essence of bahn mi and that appatizers should be nixed from any good bahn mi place, but I get a little bored eating just a sandwich with absolutely nothing with it. At least when I get a cold cut sandwich I get chips.
  • Hanco's needs to de-stem the cilantro. I know it seems like a small thing, but it's why I don't go there anymore.
  • i like the stems
  • Me too - more crunch.
  • Hanco's needs to lower its prices on bubble tea. Aside from that, I love their tofu sandwich. I'm not much into the liver pate thing, so authenticity isn't totally important to me.

Stemless cilantro is called "coriander LEAVES."

Now what are you going to say, you don't go there because they don't cut the crust off of your bread for you?

Do you pull the chocolate chips out of cookies?

If so, I better start eating with you, so I get all the good pieces!
  • Hanco's needs to step up their game when it comes to getting your food done...it takes way too long for them to make a sandwich.

If there is a new place I hope they have a meatball sub with fish sauce. There used to be a great place on Mott that had the best ever but they closed.
