Where to go bowling?

Melody Lanes is old school in Sunset Park. If you go there, make sure to spend some time at the bar with Pete the bartender, a very interesting character. I used to like the place, but had a negative customer service interaction (with the alley staff, not Pete) the last time we went there, so I haven't been as much of a booster about it lately. I tried Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg a few weeks ago and liked it a lot. It's fancier, with food by Blue Ribbon, 2 nice bars, and a nice selection of alley balls, with a wide range of fingerhole sizes in each weight of ball, and an easy color-coded system to make it easy to find the right ball. It's by the hour, not by the game, so it's a little unusual in that respect. You can have up to 8 players on a lane for $40 per hour plus shoe rental. They have an usual ball setting system which I'm not sure I love, with strings attacked to the top of each pin; I can't help but suspect that it affects the pin action in some way. The staff there are amazingly nice and helpful. I'm definitely planning to go back.
I haven't tried Maple Lanes. -
Thanks Carnivore I hadn't thought about going North.

Oh great question. We were just talking about this the other day. I so want to go bowling. In another lifetime I used to go to Bowlmor Lanes all the time.
PS needs more Bowling Alleys and some Roller Skating Rinks

The Gutter isn't bad either, but since it's only 2 blocks or so away from Brooklyn Bowl I'd recommend BB over it.

Agree with everything Carni said. Went to Brooklyn Bowl recently and really enjoyed it.

Bowlmor used to just be a shitty dirty bowling alley before it got all hipster. That was when Union Square was all run down. For a while, those were my high school bowling team's home lanes, so I was there twice a week.

Eggcream, do you remember Gil Hodges Lanes and Roll-A-Palace? -
We ended up going to Maple Lanes on 60th St and 16th Ave. It was $50 for 2 hours of bowling including shoes. The 4 of us got 3 games in it was nice that we had about a frame and half to go when our time ran out and we were able to finish the game before the machine shut down.
The selection of balls was slim and there was some poaching
It took a while to process in and out as there weren't quit enough people behind the counter but they were nice enough and when our balls got stuck they added more time for us.
There is a small parking lot in front.
Didn't try the food but there was a snack bar for burgers and sandwiches and a bar for beers. We all had a good time and it's hard to beat the price -

Yep, that's when we went back when it was a dive. Hmm, maybe we bowled at the same time. Course I have some years on ya. No, I don't remember those other places.
Ya'll should have your next get together at a bowling alley. -
We did already, this is not a new idea. Once it gets colder we may do that again.

Carni- pretty much summed it up best.
Melody is pretty cool, although the alley staff needs adjustment- some dude in my situation was a complete dick to the people i was with. Alas all was fine, as soon as he realized we were not of the pacifist type nor amused at his antics.
