Anyone friends with a hairstylist?
I'm considering a drastic career change and wanted to pick the brain of a hairstylist in NYC- anyone have a cousin/bro/sis/inlaw who works in the biz? I have some really basic questions about schools and the industry in general. Email would be awesome but I'd be elated to buy a few rounds in exchange for the advice!
Thanks brooklynians
And yes, I have tried my own stylist but he's from CA and works in a teeny tiny salon+has limited experience here...
Thanks brooklynians

That is a saturated tough industry. Why not take my advice and enter a field where a dearth of professionals exists?

If I spend the rest of my life behind a desk I'm going to kill myself. I could stick with my own job which is sadly lucrative and in high-demand...too bad I've reached my breaking point with corporate jobs I think -
Well like I suggested, VRT and OandMs are the opposite of corporate desk jobs.

I dont think I have the patience for anything like that. my moms been a spec ed teacher for 17 years and watching what she has to go through makes me realize that I am just not a good person haha

And yet your sig line.....

I can be nice and not patient

there are a BOATLOAD of careers where there are shortages, but of no interest to me at all.
I'm all for Carmen being a hairdresser so she can keep my hair in check! -
Seriously. You've already got a client base. Provided you don't suck.

I am pretty sure Aveda institute is like $40,000, takes a year and a half and there's no definite job upon completion.

there's no definite job upon completion after my college degree, and it cost way more than that! just sayin'

Aveda (which is technically the Carsten Institute in NYC) is around $12100 including kit and licensing and is a 7month full-time or 50week part time (m-th, 6-10pm) fyi
And there's very few definite jobs upon completion of any cert or degree so I just have to go with what I enjoy at this point. -

Well. Are we a Negative Nellie today? -
Do what you want to do. I've been seriously contemplating a new line of work lately. I'm not sure if there's an assassin school or how much tuition would be but I'm sure I'd qualify for a scholarship.

I would gladly write you a reference letter, Beave. I think I am still so irritated with Shit Up my Ass and Dry Cereal is Inadequate teens who ruled my last 4 weeks. If there were more people in this field, I could foist those whiney babies onto other instructors.

I take a nap and wake up to this back and forth??
Listen carmen, just do it. You know you like it, I know you'll be good at it. Aveda is highly regarded as a beauty school, but whatever, just get your license and start doing what you love!
NYC is not the end all, you can always start your own salon anywhere. SF??
I think it's an awesome idea. I have many friends who are stylists and they love what they do and they are able to also mix it up. My girl back at my last town, also sold locally made rockabilly-looking purses, and other cute items from her shop. -

I very much agree!
