Do you have any rants about your job? — Brooklynian

Do you have any rants about your job?

My day went something like this: straw meet camel's back. I make the folks I work for a boatload of money. But they're a-holes and they treat me like crap. I think today's the day that, in my mind, I no longer work for them.

Would love to hear any jobs rants to make me feel better, if anyone's got 'em.

Also, I'm thinking of heading over to Jalopy and/or Moonshine (for a "flood of drinks wearing a short skirt" to paraphrase Drunken Revival) if anyone wants to join me.

  • No bonuses. We're not allowed to take a vacation day - we have to take them all at once. The max vacation amount is three weeks. Even if you've been with them for 20+ years. There is constant fear of being fired for no reason. Departments are pitted against each other. I'm expected to build things from "conceptual plans." I get blamed when those "conceptual plans" don't take into account the 30+ year old plumbing system that is rotting and ruined but only discovered after demolition and will now cost twice the "conceptual" estimate to make operational again. My boss just bought two Maybachs but we've been told there will be no raises for two years. Is that enough?
  • My boss is crashing the agency. Despite being told over and over by funding sources how she could improve the agency's performance, she refuses to take any steps to make us meet goals and blames anything but our performance for funder's dislike of us.

She is the equivalent of the guy who gets pulled over for going 80 mph down the wrong side of the road, who then is convinced he was pulled over for something (driving a red car, being young, being black, being bald, whatever).

get the message: they dislike us because we suck. We suck because we aren't doing what they want us to do. They get to tell us what to do because ...wait for it... they are the customer, they have the money that we want.
  • Both good rants and both would annoy the hell out of me because both situations are caused by people not being professional and/or not using common sense.

Beav - the vacation rules make no sense and don't encourage long-term loyalty to the company. Also, your boss should keep his extravagant purchases to himself.

WhyNot - have you come to some sort of zen about your job? I think your job would make me physically sick to my stomach because your name is associated with an agency that does sucky work. Can someone anonymously tip off your boss' boss about your boss' denial or is that person just as bad?

I need to work for myself - I'm highly efficient, have a great work ethic and I'm not rude to me - ha! ;-)
  • d123, zen is not needed. We will soon lose a large chunk of funding. ...my goal is simply to not be the last person in the sinking ship.

Re the boss of the boss: I'd have to tell the board (not worth it...). Well, when one thinks about it the funders are actually the boss, and they are already well aware.
  • WhyNot - sorry to hear that you will be losing funding. I hope you're working your network for a new gig. PM me, if you'd like, and let me know what industry you're in and I'll see if I can connect you with folks. I'm good at it.
  • thanks, but I think I'll be ok. The funding will disappear oct 1 at the earliest, jan 1 at the latest. ...much resume sending is occuring (when not blogging, of course)
  • I'm not even going to get into it- if you want to hear my rants, we can meet for drinks at the hoff. Otherwise, ask Moug for the cliffsnotes.
  • Have no idea what/where the hoff is (David Hasselhoff's bar?) but if it's got drinks, I'm game. Things must be bad, though, because it sounds like you're gearing up to make a career change. Can I get a short preview?

The owner of my company called me tonight trying to make nice (or play dumb - one and the same). I guess I impressed upon my direct boss that I was sick and tired of all the shit and she must have called him.

I actually said, "Screw you." to my boss today. She said, "What did you say?" I repeated, "I said, 'Screw you'." She was dumbfounded. I told her I was taking the rest of the day off and I left. As I was walking out the door, she said, "But wait..." and I said, "Handle this situation. Because if you don't, you'll be looking for a new employee."

    God that felt good.

That makes me feel warm and happy. Unlike the crappy coffee in my office.

My biggest rants are mostly gone, but there was a good one that culminated in a client swearing at me over the phone and me telling him not to call back until he calmed down. Then I hung up on him. Oddly when he called back 15 seconds later he was more angry, not less ... go figure!
  • I hope you hung up on him, again! ;-)
  • I had a verbally abusive paranoid boss. But he is brilliant and a master manipulator (in a phone conference to a company trying to sell us major equipment, he could turn it into them paying us to use said equipment in moments with the reps trembling in fear). He also is doing just enough of his big boss' projects to keep his job (it would throw tons of research and such off schedule to replace him) so he gets away with treating us like shit.

When one valuable coworker tried to quit (had a start date on a great new job) and said no amount of money could keep him there, the boss started threatening to make some calls that would get him fired from any job in the field (boss does not have that much pull in the field, small as it may be). Also threatened to somehow make guy loose his fiance among other personal threats. The guy did NOT quit out of fear!

Boss refuses to eat cafeteria food b/c he thinks the company is drugging us to make us more docile. His wife who he lives with had a restraining order served to him during a very important meeting once just to piss him off (she is equally as evil and crazy). He is also convinced a colleague (who is busy running big projects) is *always* following him. Really. And he does not loose his job.

He had camera's installed "for the security of our multi-million $ equipment" but really he had it adjusted so that he could, from any computer anywhere, move the camera and watch any of us and our computers! We feared the phone b/c it meant he was calling to yell at one of us for god knows what (really to make us work unpaid OT).

He would not sign off on vacations or OT. People that worked long enough, were just loosing vacation days.

I quit this job, so maybe it doesn't make you feel great but know that there are people making shitty pay in the city under this guy. The day I quit was amazing, though I was pretty damaged for work for a while from all of the berating. "You idiot. This is crap", in an angry eastern European accent.
  • OP - that's horrible! No one should have to put up with verbal abuse at work. I hope you are working in a better work atmosphere, now.
  • Bah...deleted contents of this post for lameness, in retrospect. Carry on. :-'
  • Making the above posts seem prophetic, I am pleased to announce that the board of the agency instructed my boss that she must cut costs immediately ...prior to her vacation which begins tomorrow.

Meaning, as long expected, I am now among those who is unemployed!

The agency will shrink from 30 people to 20 people over the next month.

P.S. If my agency had been well run, I would have been laid off in March.

...because I'm no longer in detention, I will likely post less :)
  • yes, these people suck. luckily, it's a short term thing.
  • Sorry, WhyNot. Good luck either on the job search or on a really fun few months of unemployment check-sponsored leisure.

I took today off saying I wasn't feeling well. Got an email from my boss asking me to call her if I was feeling better to "deal with some things". I didn't call. I may find out tomorrow that I, too, am unemployed (or she may just say not to say, "Screw you," to her, again. ;-)
  • I was THIS >< close to calling out of work today. I ended up being told to leave yesterday due to heavy puking. I'm not convinced that it's not this place stressing me out so much that it's manifesting itself physically.

    Maybe just shed a few?
  • There's this spacehead chick here, oh let's call her Claire, and she does nothing. She cruises the computer, makes personal phone calls, comes in late, takes extra long lunches, and leaves early.

Why? Because her boss who is this little hobbit monkey-man, feels sorry for her. I mean she has worked here for about a year, but even when she does work it is shoddy stuff.

I know, I know, who am I to bitch when I am sitting here writing bullshit like this at work. Still it irks me.
  • can i have her job? how much does she get paid? I bet i'm cuter. I'll wear a lowcut shirt.
  • You are cuter, not sure how much she gets paid, but she's a temp, no bennies.

I wish I could give it to you (or me) but I can't.
  • I'm looking to hire someone...... someone smart who can learn two systems and read between the lines and help me. Whynot, you are not invited.
  • I love my new job!

  • Holy shit!

I now feel sanctified having a job that is nothing like any of these posts, yet I thought sucked. I am lucky. *crawling under my bosses desk right now* Damn fishnets :(
