themed garden.. need a great plant store
I have been working on my window garden for awhile and have decided to abandon my "run of the mill" window box and do a specially themed garden of "morbidity/misery"
I am looking for plants that symbolize negative things in "flower language"
IE:
Lobelia means malevolence
Love lies bleeding means hopelessness
candytuft means it doesnt matter/indifference
monkshood means beware/ danger
Cyclamen means resignation/goodbye
etc.
Two questions,
1) Where in Brooklyn is there a good plant shop that sells the unusual plants that I listed? I am willing to have them special order it for me, but I would rather not go through the net, so that I can be assured of quality.
2) Does anyone else know of any plants associated with "morbid" or "negative" feelings?
Thanks in advance

Sounds....er....interesting....
Venus flytraps?
I don't know what else to put in there.
I think lobelia isn't that hard to find...not sure about the rest -
candytuft shouldn't be hard, either. and cyclamens are sold as house plants, aren't they?
bleeding heart seems like a natural, but maybe that's too christ-like.
if it were spring, i'd say the BBG sale (in may) would have most of these. for that matter if you don't have luck buying plants this year, i think you could do most of these from seed next year. -

I actually have lobelia. I was looking for other "morbidly themed" plants.

I have been inspired by AMY STEWART:
http://www.amystewart.com/wickedplants.html
I would love to grow "scary" plants like nightshade and flytraps, but I don't have a yard and many of them are too hard to grow in large pots. I scrapped the "scary/gothic/macabre" plant idea for just sinister flowers, since I know things like Hemlocks, belladonna, Strychnos ignatii are too big (some are trees) and many are so deadly they are actually controlled plants.
ahh my sense for the macabre and terrifying is just too strong sometimes

yeah, bleeding heart is too christlike.. If I were to do a "spiritual garden" it would be a pagan, garden and full of wolfsbane, mandrake, wormwood and sage

I will give the botanical garden a check next may. Thanks for the advice. -
you probably know this already, but the BBG is having a "wicked plants" show right now. there's an interview with amy stewart online, too: http://www.bbg.org/exp/wickedplants/index.html

BEEN THERE ALREADY..

and want to do a similar theme in my window garden... the only thing is that although I have a lot of space, my area isnt fenced in and is animal accessible. I am not into poisoning stray cats or pigeons, so I am just trying to use plants that arent really poisonous, just negative. Its been harder than I thought to come up with sinister flowers that ARENT poisonous.
Monkshood is a plant with a negative rep that is easy to grow but there is conflicting evidence that it is severely poisonous, but I may be able to find non poisonous varieties. -

Monkshood contains aconitine, a really nasty toxin. -
so, psycho-ologist, when did your relationship end and how often does your ex drive by your place? ;-)

he drives by frequently, but not enough to get the "official" police style message of "f-off"

Not a great time of year to buy plants, although sometimes you can get deals on perennials.
Zuzu's Petals on 5th Ave (7th st?) has a great variety of unusual plants, albeit quite expensive.
I mail order plants all the time. Google mail-order plants and see what comes up. -
^^^^ what websites do you like for online shopping? are you buying seeds and bulbs, or something else?
-
Bluestone Perennials (plants mostly, good prices, recycles packing materials)
Brent & Becky's bulbs (bulbs)
Burpee (seeds and plants)
Park Seed (seeds, obviously)
and check ebay! -
^thanks. I'll check them out. Each year I get a TINY bit smarter about what I am going to plant
