Hunting for apts this weekend... plan of attack?

So... If you were visiting the city this weekend (from Ithaca) and wanted to make appointments to look at apartments in prospect heights, what would be your plan of attack? I'm looking for a 2 BR for 1800 or less starting in June. I can come in this weekend and 1 more weekend in May.

Some of the CL stuff looks OK, but nothing specifically for June (when I want to move in). I'm thinking of contacting some of the brokerages from the thread over in the park slope forum, but I'm not sure how productive (or expensive) this would be.

I've found 1 listing in clinton hill from housingmaps.com that I'm looking at on Friday, but fear that its too far away from subways for a reasonable commute to midtown.

Thanks for all of your help!

  • well if the realtors and cl doesnt work out :p. my building should be ready by june hehe.
  • you should also check out long island city or astoria :). much easier to get to mid town too :). but its in queens :p.
  • Yea, I have definitely checked out the Astoria option. My cousin lives there now. I may sound naive saying this, but Brooklyn to me just looks like the more fun and exciting option. In addition, I want to be able to go out in the village with little hassle (I'm a big jazz nut, but a huge fan of all live music in general).
  • Hate to tell ya this, but you're not going to be likely to find much available for June 1 until after the beginning of May. People do apartment-hunting here maddeningly late; having lived in a college town where you had to line up a place for August 1 by the end of April, it drives me crazy when I have to hunt for apartments and don't know where I'm going to be living in three or four weeks.

I just moved, so last month and the month before I was dealing with all this stuff. I ended up going with a broker because CL didn't have many no-fee apartments in my price range and the ones I did look at were downright frightening.

Try to get a place that's rent stabilized if at all possible, unless you feel relatively certain you only want to stay a year or two. With market rate apartments, your landlord can jack up your rent all he/she wants and there's not a thing you can do about it (my own move was prompted by my old landlord wanting me to pay another $250 a month when my lease came up for renewal, after already increasing it by $100 the year before). And do archive searches here for your broker's name, the landlord or realty company, and the block each place is on -- I found out about several brokers to avoid this way, and I was able to find out which areas were sketchy and dangerous and which areas were safe. In Crown Heights, it's generally safer and nicer in the northern and western parts of the neighborhood.

    Good luck!

Come and live in Prospect Heights -- it's New York's sweet spot for great transport, amenities, vibe, and reasonable prices. Plus the air is fresher because it's on a hill next to the parks. CL is the go, ideally mom-and-pop renting the top 2bdr of their 2/3 family, bypassing the big guys and the brokers fee. But they generally start advertising 1 June in the first week of May. $1800 should get you ca.900sqft in a nice place btwn Flatbush and Washington. Good luck.

Thanks for your responses! Like I said, I'm making another trip in May. I guess this first trip I will just scope out the different areas I am interested in, and the general layout of everything.

Sure thing - looks like most brokers are closed this weekend anyway (who cares...haha).
  • Subject: Anyone familiar with this area?

Is anyone familiar with the neighborhood around St Johns Pl & Franklin Ave? How is it? There is a place there that looks promising (maybe).

Thanks for all of your help and opinions, as always.

go ask around the ch boards :)http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=4
  • if the place in question is part of the jewish hospital buildings, GET EVERYTHING THEY SAY TO YOU IN WRITING. sorry to shout. i live there and like my apartment. but the rental agents (not only the broker who wasn't supposed to be there since it was listed as on fee -- another story) told me more lies that i care to count.

OK, so this place is actually is Prospect Heights proper.

Can anyone tell me anything about the area on Bergen Street between 6th and Carlton? Safety of the park, the block in general. Thanks very much.
  • Subject: Its fine

I live a block from there -- its a decent block. And, you're 2 blocks from the 2/3 stop, which -- whether you know it or not -- will be very useful in your NYC future (30 mins to Times Square). Since you are renting it doesn't matter - but that block is quite close to the nexus of Ratnerdom.

    Good luck.

It seems to be a nice block. I walk down it everyday to the train which is right on the corner. It is also on the same block as a precinct and around the corner from a fire house. The park is used by lots of people during the day and there are usually some pretty big basketball games on the weekends. Parking is really hard there especially because of the precinct. It doesn't seem to be a very quiet block.
  • Thanks very much!

Is it really loud at night? Should I expect lots of police and fire sirens?

This isn't such a big deal for me as much as safety.
  • Police sirens, no, fire engine sirens...absolutely. Even better, if the fire trucks pick up enough speed going down Dean St., it rattles the cars, setting off their alarms. But you get used to it and its not really all that bad. These are not reasons to NOT take an apartment if you see one you like and can afford.

I dont think it is very loud at night. During the day it can be a bit noisy because closer to 6th it is more commercial than residential, but you would get used to it.
