    Internet scammers make tons of money. Even the 419 advance-fee guys make millions every year with their tales of former dictators' illicit loot stashed away in African "Security Companies" (for which you must pay "demurrage" fees), or bank accounts orphaned by the holder's death in an airplane crash. Remember, every day brings fresh, unjaded people to the internet, who have not been warned about all varieties of rip-off predators online.

    I think I'm getting it now. They apparently never come for the rowing machine. If the OP went through with the deal, the check would "accidently" be for a few hundred dollars more, which of course, the OP wouldn't mind returning to the buyer, less $50 for her troubles.
    She is then liable for the entire amount once the check bounces. Nice.

    Right... you send the difference to him at wherever he is "on assignment" or his "honeymoon" (ahhh yes, a beautiful Nigerian honeymoon) via Western Union (you never get his address) and he will use it to pay his "mover" (himself) who he says will come over to pick it up (and will never show).
