  • Yeah I just walked down there to check it out. I think it happened between St Marks and Bergen. There's a guy in an ambulance at Bergen. I heard he was hit in the foot. There's a lot of people out in the street. Crazy.
  • I was walking by when it happened. One round of shots, a pause, then another round of shots. 8 to 10 in all, maybe. I think the shooting was right in front of the Kelso or the bar on the same block. There were about 50 people hanging out on the sidewalk, so I'm hoping Spnder's report is right and the worst that happened is someone took a bullet in the foot. Scary, and very sad.

FYI, tomorrow night is the monthly community council meeting for the 77th precinct, which covers all of Crown Heights North and Prospect Heights. The precinct community council meeting is held every second Monday of the month at 7:30 127 Utica Avenue. http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/precincts/precinct_077.shtml. I'm going to be encouraging all of my neighbors to attend with me.
  • "I'm going to be encouraging all of my neighbors to attend with me."

Thanks for the info. If you would, please post back with any news for those who cannot attend.

FYI- It went up on the Gothamist news map as a triple shooting.
  • Gothamist has it as a triple shooting on Franklin & Bergen.
  • I heard it right before I was taking the dogs out, it was in front of the panamanian club a few doors down from me. My neighbor said everyone started running but they caught one guy and beat the crap out of him. I feel bad for the cops, there were a lot of people out there but they'll have a hard time finding anyone who will talk. I don't think they caught the last guy who killed someone outside that club a year or so ago.
  • Just heard from a neighbor that there is no 77th precinct community council meeting this month. I called the precinct and confirmed - next meeting is on 9/14. Sorry about the misinformation (77th's website did not mention the summer recess).
  • Dude and I asked the cop hanging out by the police tape this morning whether the victims lived.

    He stated yes
  • I heard the shots from a friends window. Very disturbing. It sounded like the 80's. I moved to GA because of that, never moved back. I hope we are not headed back to that crazy Wild Wild West mentality!!
    Sad.

what is the website for the 77th?
  • Subject: Shooting on Franklin Ave. Sunday night

Thanks for the info everyone. I am on St Marks Ave. right by Franklin as well and last night's shooting freaked me out. The way people were screaming and running down my street I though the guy with the gun was chasing them. I hope the rumor is right and no one was killed!
  • WTF??? Does anyone have any idea of what the hell is going on in those couple of blocks? Seriously any conjecture or scuttlebutt or sheer fabrication would be appreciated.

All of these shootings have to be related, don't they? They're all within a block of each other.

Rival drug crews? Family vendettas? What?!!?
  • It is both alarming and disturbing. I would've thought with all the nice new businesses that have been going up over the last two years would encourage a more neighborly feel. My guess, and I hate to be cliche...the economic downturn. People get desperate when opportunities dry up.

Things were getting better for a while- now I just feel like its reverting back and it makes me sad and mad.
  • what panamian club? kelso's restaurant?

also, just an observation, i lived right around there for a year in 2007. stuff like this happened all the time then as well. i don't think things are getting worse.

The only thing against the "downturn" argument is that the type of asshole who starts blasting away on crowded streets (and involved in whatever activities lead to shootouts) was unlikely a gainfully employed and responsible citizen up until he/she was let go from their job a few months ago.

I'd wager that if the shooters are ever caught that their resumes would be a trifle light.
  • Does anybody know the website? I can't find it.

You can get to it through nyc.gov. Go to the Police Department and there is a link by precinct name.
  • anyone know what panamanian club was referenced in this thread?

I never implied, or at least didn't mean to, say that these dickwads were working Wall St before the recession, I'm just saying that as times get rough, those types of people get rougher.

It's the trickle down affect. Douchy Wall Street guy loves his crack- he buys it from a high level dude (no corner dude for Mr Wall St). Well, Wall St dude loses him job. Now high level dude loses his high level customers, he has to go down a notch to keep his shit going and his bitches quiet. Now, low level dude is all "wtf? Who dis muthafucka taking my corner up in dis place, yo?" Low level dudes abound- low level dudes are roaches, trying to get theirs. Sometimes they gotta stomp each other out. Gotsta prove themselves.

Just a theory- but whatever, it is what it is- UNACCEPTABLE either way.
  • Some evidence at least points towards some conflict going on in the Western half of Crown Heights North, rather than an overall uptick in violence and crime. The compstat report for the 77th, which covers all of Prospect Heights and Crown Heights North of Eastern Parkway, shows all crimes except for car theft significantly lower this year over last. There were slightly fewer murders by this time of the year in 2007, but all other crimes were also higher then, as well as 8 and 16 years ago: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/downloads/pdf/crime_statistics/cs077pct.pdf

This suggests that overall crime is not up, but that, for some reason, the area around Franklin has become hot. A visit to the NYTimes homicide map seems to confirm this (for homicides at least):
    http://projects.nytimes.com/crime/homicides/map

Home in on Crown Heights North and pull the marker to 2005. Homicides kind of spread out, with a slight concentration North of Brower park. Now check out 2006. Small concentrations around Nostrand, Utica and South of the Albany Houses. 2007 and 2008 show homicides spread across the precinct as well, with some small concentrations. Now go to 2009. 7 of Crown Heights North's killings are between Nostrand and Washington, with the rest of the precinct relatively "quiet", and of these 7, 6 are within a few blocks of each other, centered around St. Mark's and Bedford, more or less. And these numbers do not include any of the victims from in front of Sushi Tatsu two weeks ago or Kelso last night (hopefully all the victims will pull through).

This is just two sets of data, but it seems to suggest that there is some "war" or something going on in Northwest Crown Heights (or a really unfortunate coincidence), and that what we have been experiencing is not an uptick in overall crime in the city, or even in Crown Heights. But the year is young yet... fingers crossed and peace to everyone.
  • well whatever it is, I'm pissed and wondering why the f**** that police tower is all the way down on sterling or lincoln when it appears the real action is happening near dean and bergen.

or do they not care about bodies and shootings, only narcotics?
  • ...um, if the tower is moved, so will the "real action".
  • mr. met wrote: anyone know what panamanian club was referenced in this thread?
    It's the B & B Sports Club 1 door down from Kelso.
  • whynot_31 wrote: ...um, if the tower is moved, so will the "real action".
I don't think that's entirely true -- clearly they think the towers do something other than displacement.

at least it's better than (a) throwing up one's hands in resignation or (b) pretending like keeping the tower where it's currently located is achieving anything...

I guess I trust that the police know what they're doing in terms of spotting trends. There had been a shooting right near that corner and of course there are many more businesses down that way than there are up towards Atlantic. However, since the tower went up what *is* clear is that people have absolutely no problems shooting guns in crowded streets just a few blocks away from it.

Anyhow, forget the tower. I'd take any increase in presence farther north on Franklin. I feel like I barely see any cops around.

Wow that's really scarey. I'm over by Park Place and the most I hear are aggravating kids up at night making noise. Well, then again I thought what I heard was fire works a week or two or so right on the block. I pulled my curtains and went to the backroom. A friend of mine told me that my area is fine it's President's street that's unsafe.
  • So believe this if you want but I got the story last night from the guy it happened to. Apparently, 4 hours after the shooting the cops arrested a guy (E) who lives above the club. They knocked on the door, E's mother asked who it was and the cops told her that the building was on fire. She opened the door, they came in and demanded that E stand up and show his hands. The cops had a mug shot that they held up next to his face, the mug shot was of a 6'4" black guy with dreads. E does not have dreads and is maybe 5'11. One cop said it wasn't him, another said it was, E told them he had ID in the other room but they wouldn't let him get it. They tried to cuff him, he kept telling them they had the wrong guy and to check his ID. They didn't listen and tried to cuff him again, one of the cops pushed his 60 year old mother so E shoved one of them.

They ended up dragging him out of his apartment barefoot and downstairs. There were a lot of people outside the club, they all told the cops who he was. That he'd just come back from college and he lived upstairs with his mom. The cops put him in the back of a police car, a detective came over and told him that they talked to the people outside and were going to let him go. The detective left and the freaking cop car drove off with E in the back. If it wasn't for a cop at the 77th who got him a pair of shoes he would have gone through central booking barefoot. When he finally got in front of a judge, the judge looked at the mug shot of the guy the cops were looking for, then at E. The judge was not pleased with the DA and let him go.

Okay, E is one of the guys in the neighborhood who is actually a good guy. He's not hanging out on the corner at all hours of the night, he went to school on a football scholarship. He walks his dogs, takes care of his mom and goes to school. I heard what happened on Monday from a guy in the pharmacy on the block and was shocked that they arrested E. The cops never told him what he was being arrested for and never read him his rights. They used false pretenses to get into the apartment and lied to the judge. They said that E saw them in the hallway and ran away from them into his apartment. Despite looking nothing like the guy in the mugshot, E offering to show them his ID, and everyone outside telling the cops who he was, they still arrested him.

If you got this story from "E" which rhymes with "B" which is the first letter in his last name...he is pulling your leg.

There was reason to believe that the shooter was hiding in the basement of B&B. After taking all of the neccesary precautions and making every attempt to have the shooter surrender voluntarily (treated like a hostage situation) members of the Emergency Service Unit made entry into the basement and conducted a thorough search.

After clearing the basement ESU turned their attention to the rest of the building and began making entry into the apartments above the bar. After ESU made contact with "E" he became hostile and irrate. In order to continue the search and investigation "E' was handcuffed and taken into custody.

Before putting "E" into the back of the police car a comparision was made to the perps prior mug shot. It was determined that E was not the shooter and the search continued. "E" was charged with OGA, Resisting Arrest and Disorderly Conduct. "E" was not charged in connection with the shooting.

"E" was fully aware of the ongoing situation downstairs because he repeatedly (and admittedly)looked out his window at the street below and the unfolding investigation. Officers had knocked on his door several times in order to speak with him and to also move him to safety while the hunt was still on for a gunman. "E" refused all requests to answer the door.

A defendant will not be allowed in front of the judge without shoes. One way or another the police would have gotten his shoes.
  • i believe the police officer
  • I'm inclined to believe a little of both stories. I've seen what some of the people around here can be like and I've seen how some of the cops around here act. Very few residents talk when a crime happens and I'm sure that frustrates the cops. I think the whole "no snitching" thing is ridiculous, nothing will improve if people keep their mouths shut.

I live 3 buildings over from the club and was about to walk my dogs when we heard the shots. Trust me, I don't like this shit happening so close to me. But I think the truth of E's arrest lies somewhere between his and ParadeRest's stories.

    FYI, ParadeRest is EMS.
